Used to stay in Chambersburg during week for work and commute home to Pittsburgh on weekends. Sometime in summer, the farmers spray their fields with manure. The entire town and surrounding areas would stink.

On a related note, some parts of Harmar and Oakmont smell really awful when the sewage plant is doing its thing. Have you ever heard anyone say "oh no, it doesn't bother me, I'm used to it?"

i love farm and rural smells. and the smell of truck stop air - the diesel / gasoline combination in the summer. there is no reason for both situations except maybe it reminds me of the gallavanting, more adventurous younger days driving to camping, the atlantic beaches, or other states.

This manure smell wasn't the horse stable kind of smell, which doesn't bother me in the least. rather, it was more of a rotting, burnt smell, not very pleasant. The smells of new asphalt, freshly cut grass, clover and rain on a hot evening are all pleasant to me, probably because they remind me of summer.

Sewer manhole? There's one near me that smells bad depending on some combination of temperature, rainfall, and perhaps maintenance status.

Mostly this... hot metal + burned oil with a hint of sulfur. We moved here (Wexford area) about 3 months ago and noticed this almost immediately. It isn't constant; it comes & goes but is enough to stink up your house and irritate your sinuses when the windows are open on an otherwise nice evening.

We've been @ parks in the burbs and have gone into town a number of times and never noticed a smell until we got home and had a sooty stink on our clothes. Last month at the lookout near the top of the Mon Incline my daughter pointed out a cloud of thick black smoke that puffed out over the skyline and disappeared in the breeze. I told her it was just part of the territory.

Clairton Coke works tends to emit more overnight when people are sleeping. The stench travels far and wide.

When I lived in Squirrel Hill, I regularly noticed the smell of what I described as burning creosote and metal. It was always late on Sunday nights, starting sometime in the winter of 2001. I did not notice it from 1999 to 2001. It gave me a headache, and closing all my windows did not help the way it might have if someone were grilling next door, say, or smoking on my porch. I think the smell was still there when I moved in 2009. It could be other nights, too, but Sunday was guaranteed. A friend who lived on the Dormont/Mt. Lebanon border said he smelled "burning garbage" at the same time.

A number of people told me it was the smell of them cleaning the Clairton Coke Works. I was always curious why I didn't smell it the first two years I lived there.
