So our "leaders" want to make it smaller...

True, but the airport is too big. Getting bags some nights can take a lot longer than it should and the changes that they'll be making will enhance the current layout and make it friendlier for local users instead of layovers.

I have little faith. Flying in and out of Pittsburgh is so much more pleasant than other airport. We bid for the Amazon HQ and at the same time plan to make an airport which travelers like smaller. We can have our bike lanes while Amazon goes somewhere else.

The airport is half empty. It will be smaller AND better. Not a hard concept to grasp. I am sure they know more than the general public on airport design and layout and how to plan for future growth.

Not everything has to be turned into some rant about bike lanes and how those in charge don't know what they are doing.

Smaller than won’t make it more crowded because there are literal sections that are boarded off right now that could be brought back into service. As long as they preserve the current gate side experience with all the shopping and eating options, I think it will be a good upgrade.

Check this out: PIT – Terminal Modernization Program

Apparently only 40 gates are currently being used, the new airport terminal will have 51.

so basically they are eliminating the tram portion. why did they set it up that way in the first place?

Probably because it gave the infield a 360 degree access to planes, minimizing foot distance for an airport with over 70 gates. Orlando is set up that way. Atlanta is sort of set up that way, Tampa has multiple airside terminals. Big airports use transit to move people around. Now it’s sinply not needed for the size of traffic so they’re eliminating the expense while setting up a modern design.

Exactly, it was set up to be a hub, where layovers were a greater portion of traffic than origin & destination traffic. In this regard, only a small portion of passengers would use the tram, but it would theoretically be much easier for the layover passengers to get from one gate to another, and planes could get in and out more quickly without having the major traffic jams you get on the tarmac at places like O'Hare.

Denver has a sort of similar setup, with its busiest terminal as an "island" where aircraft have 360 degree access.

It was a revolutionary design when it was constructed, with the 360 access to the airside terminal. In addition to not having to transfer terminals for passengers, the x-shape in the middle of the runways saved airlines in fuel costs because they didn't have far to go to take off.

The airport was designed as the major hub airport for USAir at the time, so design work was done in the 1980s, when flying was still a pretty pleasurable experience and before the pajamas and cattle car era. The airline industry has changed immensely since then, and not necessarily for the better.
