Sewickley is fairly small borough It has its own downtown with some small shops and restaurants. They do have a private school, as well as small car dealership, and a country club. I believe the public school is Quaker Valley.
You'll have to head over the river to Moon for groceries, but its a short trip. The homes in Sewickley proper are on standard lots, in Sewickley heights there is a minimum acreage requirement.
It's a pretty quiet scenic area, definitely one of Pittsburghs most expensive areas.

Ok, the post above is only semi-accurate, since the person obviously doesn't live in Sewickley. There are public and private school districts, Quaker Valley and Sewickley Academy, both are arguably some of the top schools in the Country. There are several luxury car dealerships specializing in Audi BMW Land Rover Lotus as well as one of only 2 Rolls Royce dealerships in all of PA. You can probably tell that this is a pretty rich area... well it is, but its not as bad as you think. Its not as bland and standoffish as a place like fox chapel, it has small town charm and pride which shows through in its Memorial Day parade and Light Up Night in November. Sewickley Borough has a more "urban" center and a lot of apartments reside in this area making it affordable to live in this nice town for almost anyone, you're out of luck if you only want to rent in fox chapel.
The thought that you would have to head to Moon for groceries is laughable... there is a grocery store right in town not to mention a Giant Eagle 2 miles down 65 in Leetsdale. The country club in town called the Edgeworth Club that I live next to just underwent huge renovations to the pool, tennis courts and dining areas. I don't belong there but I have visited as a guest several times and its pretty nice, it also has indoor bowling lanes. Driving through Sewickely is one of nicest perks of living here, it is easily has the most beatiful main street of any town I have ever driven through, the people take great pride in keeping their town looking very good, there is also no litter anywhere. Just come drive down the main street and see for yourself!!

While the housing market has slowed even here in the Pittsburgh area, Sewickley is about to see two very impressive estates come to fruition. One Edgeworth estate is close to being completed for an estimated 15 to 20 million. And in Sewickley Heights ground is being broken for a 30,000 plus sq ft estate. A blend of new and older money!

Most Edgeworth "estates" aren't really estates... I know because I live there, but this one definitely qualifies. Sewickley Heights usually has the monopoly in the estate market, so its no suprise that a new one is going up there. Though its nice to see that Edgeworth can attract that demographic as well.
With Bell Acres starting to get in on the action as well, its getting pretty obvious that the whatever the status of the U.S. housing market... it doesn't apply in Sewickley. Though without careful supervision by the borough things can get out of hand rather quickly... wow: http://www.postgazette.com/homes/200...ouse0907p3.asp
Rock, where did you get that info on the new Sewickley Heights estate?

Moving to Sewickley
We are also likely moving to Sewickley next summer (July 2008) with our little kids and dog. Would any of the other posters who are moving to Sewickley like to trade contact info/emails?
We loved the small town/upscale/walkable nature of the area immediately, and the little tennis/pool club cinched it. It seems to have a lot of the characteristics that drew us to Capitol Hill, where we live now. I have always liked little towns like Summit NJ and Concord MA, and Sewickley reminds me of those places too.
I love all the inside info people have been posting, please tell us more about the good, the bad, and the ugly of Sewickley.
In particular, we had a real estate agent show us the "North Hill" developments, most of which weren't really our style. We found Sewickley on our own. Are there any other places we should check out? We need to live within a 20 min (or less) drive from Alleg. General Hospital for work reasons. We love to jog, walk the dog, play tennis, fish, swim, and a great playground for the kids is a must. We'd love a yard, but haven't had one yet so it need not be that big.

Mario Lemieux lives in Sewickley.
Teresa Heinz and her husband Senator John Kerry live in Fox Chapel.
On the plus side, Sewickley has the best suburb YMCA in greater Pittsburgh.

Hi Troutfisher,
We lived in Sewickley for three years (actually, up the hill in Bell Acres) and absolutely LOVED it. Quaker Valley School District was WONDERFUL....with an average high school graduating class of approx. 160 students, you can be sure your kids will get lots of individualized attention. Being one of the first Digital School Districts in the state (in the nation as well? not sure) means your kids will get superb, hands-on exposure to the Electronic Age....a must for the next generation in this increasingly globalized economy.
Our kids made tons of friends .... and we loved the village atmosphere, and going to all of the events that keep the community connected.
Although there is a lot to be said for living right in town (close to everything), we chose to live 3 miles away, in Bell Acres....and are very glad we did! More land, less taxes, more wildlife, more peace/serenity. I never imagined living in a place where I'd regularly have to brake for wild turkeys crossing the road!
We loved our home there, and miss it dearly....it backs up to the Sewickley Heights Golf Course and Western Pennsylvania Conservancy land. Our kids would regularly walk the short trail leading to the trout-stocked pond behind our home. My husband would take the kids sledding on the golf course in the winter.
The village was a 5 minute drive from our home, so I really feel like we got the best of both worlds.
Best of luck to you and your family.....I'd highly recommend a move to the area....you'll never meet a nicer bunch of people.

This is because the Boro is the central "urban" business district of the Sewickley Area. Usually, Edgeworth, Sewickley Heights, Sewickley Hills, and Sewickley Boro are usually lumped together as the "Sewickley Area". An example is the soccer league is called Sewickley Area Soccer.

So if my math is right (big if), the average household income in Sewickley, Sewickley Heights, and Sewickley Hills combined was $60973.
|
You forgot to include Edgeworth, which for all intents and purposes is included with the other 3 as part of the greater Sewickley Area. That should boost the number further, as Edgeworth has a median household income of $120024.
