This has happened for two weeks in a row now. We have lived in Highland Park for almost a year and every week we take our trash (in white trash bag with orange drawstrings bought at Costco) out to the curb. Every week they collect it (including any recyclables on recycle day).

However, for the last two weeks, every other trash bag on our street is taken (including our recyclables) but our white trash bag is left out sitting on the curb by the time I get back home.

Why is this?

Is it visible to the truck (i.e. not behind a car or under a bush)? Have you called 311 about it? They'll usually send someone out to pick up any missed bags.

Yes, it is visible to the truck because they managed to grab the recyclables and leave the trash behind. We kept them in a pile together. This has happened two weeks in a row. All the other 40 weeks or so, they've collected the trash just fine.

This also happened to me two weeks in a row recently. I've lived in Polish Hill since 2010, and this is the first time where I had back-to-back weeks of everyone else's garbage being picked up except for mine. I will say it's rude when neighbors come home late at night, see there's a trash bag along the curb, and then insist to park with their wheels practically atop them anyways, obscuring their view. I routinely have to move my garbage bags when I leave for work at 6:10 AM. Thankfully we don't produce much trash, so I would just bring the bag in after work and put it out as an extra bag the following week.

I will also say that 311 is exceptional. Call them, Tweet at them, text them, etc. They'll get someone on it!

Call directly to public works environmental services dept. They'll send somebody out to retrieve the trash. This happened to me a few years ago, but I think it was an entire block that was missed.

Speak directly to the sanitation workers. They have a wealth of information. Are the individual bags to heavy? Do you place the trash in the correct spot?

I've done this before and gotten cussed out. In front of my two year old, who loves the garbage truck. Was not fun. We were having issues where they would only pull bags out of our cans, and leave things in the bottom (particularly smaller bags). The sanitation workers said that while my can was regulation (35 gal max?), they didn't like the style I had and were not willing to dump it. That resulted in more and more trash being left over time, rather than the opposite.

We decided to bag everything in big bags rather than any sort of small bags inside the can. It is a shame, because this generates more waste rather than less. I wish we could go to the trucks with can-grabbing arms on the side, but I doubt our topography and street parking situation would ever allow for it.

Shame. Kind of what one would expect these days though.

I wouldn't go that far. Unless you are satisfied with responses such as "huh", "not my job".
