Breaking news and not good news. The Hempfield plant will be closed and consolidated into a modern plant in Arkansas. What the heck is going on with the plant closings around the area.

Kennametal moved their headquarters from Latrobe to Pittsburgh if that's any consolation.

If you want to really understand what is happening, and not think it is just a Pgh thing...here is the reason:

Kennametal CEO Christopher Rossi said the plants are being closed to further improve operational efficiency and continue to drive value for shareholders.

And the answer is: Exploitation of available labor in otherwise impoverished areas. Building a new facility in such an area could be viewed as being a humanitarian act. Firing existing workers to move their jobs to such an area is corporate greed.

You can bet the Arkansas workers and local management will not be receiving the same pay and benefits as their Pittsburgh counterparts, although the Corporate Management team will see no corresponding decrease in their pay or perks. I will be very surprised to hear of any followup articles identifying a massive increase is dividend or share price associated with this move, things which would qualify as "Shareholder Value". The additional revenue generated from these labor cost savings will only be distributed/shared throughout the highest levels of management.
