The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) is asking developers and community members to submit plans for the revitalization of sites along the Centre Avenue corridor in the Middle Hill. These sites include a combination of 170 URA and city-owned parcels, 161 of which are currently vacant lots.

And so the gentrification of the Middle Hill begins.

I don't think it's fair to call this gentrification.

1. The URA very rarely gets involved with market-rate residential development. These projects will almost certainly be mixed income.

2. Even if they wanted to build market-rate apartments in the Middle Hill, developers would lose money constructing them.

Considering the status is of these blocks, anything is an improvement.

Geez, that is lower than a third world country. How can things deteriorate so low in such a brisk economy? I am sure our tax dollars will help some, but why not make those areas green space? Plant trees and just make it forest. We keep throwing money at this type of thing and nothing really changes.

There's portions of the Hill I'd argue that maybe "rewilding" is a good idea (like this little pocket neighborhood) but Centre Avenue is a major corridor between Oakland and Downtown. If there's one road which deserves to be rebuilt through its entire length, it's certainly the one.

gg doesn't think "they" deserve anything after "they" rioted following MLK Jr. assassination.

Wow, yes good idea. Why must green space by built on. Just enforce the code regarding building upkeep. At least the Hill has some character left. I would hate to see greedy house flippers profit here.

I think that the Middle Hill is going to take off like a rocket in terms of gentrification.
Awesome access to the Strip, right next door to the soon to be gentrified Uptown, easy access to Downtown, direct access to the South Side, fairly easy access to Lawrenceville...

Majority-black neighborhoods - let alone 90% black neighborhoods - rarely gentrify. When they do, it tends to happen extremely slowly (see the North Side, where it's been happening since the 1970s and it still isn't done) or due to a heavy pro-development plan by local government and/or local stakeholders (see East Liberty). Gentrification instead preferentially happens in working-class white neighborhoods (like Lawrenceville) or Latino ones (which we admittedly lack - but you can look at Chicago and see that basically everywhere that is gentrifying is a former Latino neighborhood, and the black neighborhoods don't change).
