Omaha Nebraska, larger than Pittsburgh as a city (400,000) but considerably smaller in MSA (942,000) has two med schools, one public (University of Nebraska) and one private (Creighton U). It's about choices.

Can't understand why Duquesne U. is going with an osteopathic rather than a regular allopathic med school.
There wouldn't be enough residency slots for all the graduates. The rise in number of medical schools have overwhelmed slots available. Times have changed.

Our youngest is a Second Year Resident at UPMC. I wondered if anyone would point out the affiliation......

Per our recent MD graduate, the differences between a MD and DO are so minor as to be insignificant.

And some Universities, such as Michigan State University, have one of each. Their DO school is located on the Main Campus in East Lansing MI, while their MD school is located an hour or more away in Grand Rapids MI.

It's harder for DOs to match for residency, and MUCH harder for them to match in competitive specialties/top programs.

I'm a proud graduate of Pitt's School of Nursing.

Yes, but not the same. UPMC is way too big to be limited by being a part of the university.

For those that don't know this (unless I am somewhat misinformed):

For a long time, the allopathic medical profession (or at least in the United States) fully recognizes DOs (Doctors of Osteopathy) as full-fledged medical doctors . . . being that DOs get the full training that an allopathic M.D. has gets and then the osteopathic framework is adding to that as well. So those certifed as DOs are not looked upon as "lesser than" by the allopathic medical profession (e.g., the AMA or American Medical Association). Is it the same for other nations as well? I don't know per this typing (I'd have to research this online).

Really??? UPMC is not a part of the University of Pittsburgh??? I didn't know that! (I used to live in the Pittsburgh region in the first half of the 1980s.)

So they use the name "UPMC" (which I assume stands for "University of Pittsburgh Medical Center") and yet they are NOT, in fact, a part of the University of Pittsburgh anymore?????? How strange! Then why didn't they change their name to something different . . . i.e., to not convey the impression that they are, in fact, a part of Pitt? (I'll read up on it myself online)
