I also live in Colorado, visit the Pgh forum frequently b/c I am a native. The two cities are very different. If you want farther out suburbs, there is Cranberry Twp. and Wexford to the north. They are the places with the newer homes such as in HR, Parker, etc. I understand also Peter's Twp in Washington Co to the way south is similar. Most of the suburbs in the Pgh area aren't cities, they are townships. It's not just a difference in government, they are just not set up like cities with downtowns. More like HR actually than Parker, Aurora, some of the other suburban Denver cities. Lots of much older housing in Pgh.

I was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. I just moved away 2 years ago to the Washington, DC area. WOW, what a difference! Anyways to answer your questions about suburbs. I would look into North Hills, Allison Park, Shaler, McCandless (these are all within 30 minutes from the city)....oh, also try looking into Bethel Park....very nice out there.
Let me know if you need any other advice.

good suburbs
Pittsburgh is full of great suburbs. What is your price range?
Do you want under 30 minutes commute downtown? Again, most of Allegheny County fits within that range.
What style home and type of neighborhood do you like?
Older architecture, walking neighborhoods:
Mt. Lebanon, Sewickley, Squirrel Hill, Shadyside and many others.
Middle to newer architecture, driving neighborhoods:
Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park, Robinson Township, Moon, Monroeville, etc.
New homes, driving neighborhoods:
Cranberry Twp, South Fayette
Welcome!
