Default divorce and health insurance

im gettin a divorce...my job does not provide benefits...how long can i be on the spouses insurance and when can she take me off? does she have to wait until the divorce is final or as soon as we file?

Contact the Plan Administrator. This will usually be the phone number you can call during your spouse's open enrollment period. Otherwise, call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask for eligibility help.

Ask for the spousal eligibility rules. Typically, upon divorce, you must report the life event within 60 days of the actual date, or risk total global thermonuclear warfare. Well, at least you'll risk losing your rights to COBRA continuation coverage.

If your spouse's plan is subject to COBRA rules, then you can continue the coverage, but at full premium plus 2%, for up to 36 months.

Wow, that so sucks. I'm so sorry for you. As a person who has major health problems myself, I can imagine how awful it must feel to have to even ask that question!
