You'll see the same thing thing. If you do see a dark skinned one on there, they'll be playing the part of a maid or something.

Blacks do the same thing. How many really dark skin blacks do you ever see with a light skin boyfriend or girlfriend. Tyra Banks even did one of her 'shows' on this very topic.

Racism, alot of times, comes down to 'ones' experience or their 'parents' experience growing up. A white kid who was born and raised in 'Fox Chapel', will less likely be racist, than maybe some kid who was raised in Lawerenceville or the Northside. I'm not going to go on a rant like I did in a previous thread. It's pretty common sense to me. The Kennedy's are very pro minority. Which is great and all. But, how many street corners, playgrounds or schools, did ANY of Kennedy clan ever interact with minorities?

Did you see or hear what just happenned on the the show 'The View'. Whoopi Goldberg in her OWN words said "Blacks and Whites LIVE in different worlds". She then went on to say "How her own mother couldn't vote". Well we ALL know that was the past. Her mother CAN vote now. That just reinforces what I was talking about, and what I said on another thread (never letting go of the past). I read on a different forum that people made comments about what she said. Overwhelmingly, people said that they're sick and tired of hearing stuff like this. And that statements that she made, does nothing to help race relations or racism. In fact, most said it FUELS it.

I live in NYC now. Believe me, racism EXISTS here like EVERYWHERE else. If I walk into an ALL asian bar, they don't HIDE the fact that they don't want me in there. I hear people all the time saying racists comments about different races. Racism is a fact of life, deal with it or don't. You won't change the world. If you ain't racist, that's great. You're doing your part. But to think that the entire WORLD is going to change, is nieve, to say the least. I would say to the OP, Pittsburgh is no different than anywhere else. Except in Pittsburgh, you don't have a LARGE hispanic population to shield yourself like you could in other cities.

In other cities you have ENTIRE neighborhoods that are hispanic. So, in you live and work in them neighborhoods, how would you ever notice the difference? Certainly, your own race ain't going to be racist towards you.
I like this post. I agree with most of what you said. I was raised in Pittsburgh, mostly around the East End. Lived for a long time in Garfield, where our block was mostly white but the street behind us was mostly black, and what you say about one's early experiences holds true for the most part, but some of us get past our upbringings, I think I did. And what you said about the Kennedy kids, mostly Bobby's kids are who we would be talking about isn't entirely true. Because of their drug history, pretty heavy stuff from what I've read, they had a lot of exposure to the black ghettos in NYC, used to make midnight forays up to Harlem on their bicycles to score heroine.

I live in L.A. now, and what you said about the Mexican racism amongst themselves is largely true. But it's not a shade of brown thing as much as it is a European vs. Indian blood thing, but it's there. I also have walked into a lot of Asian bars out here, (Koreans are the worst in this sense), and had no doubt that I wasn't wanted. Stayed anyway though, bought a few rounds and made them laugh; it was worth my while; always had a thing for Asian chicks, can't help it. And in New York, territorial wars, at least used to be so common that they made a hundred movies about it.

If Latinos experience racism in Pittsburgh it's because there just aren't that many of them yet. They are a novelty for now. I had my bout with it. They just have to wait until they're not the bottom of totem pole anymore. After the Iraq or Afghan wars for example, even Pittsburgh could end up with a little Baghdad or Kabul.

LOL, Couldn't agree with you more about the 'Koreon bars'. And like you, I stay as well. Sometimes they even charge me 'more' for the beer I'm drinking than the other patrons. I still stay, cause I KNOW it *****ES them off. I like ASIAN chics too LOL.

But as far as the Bobby's kids, how many of them 'hung around' after they 'scored them drugs'? It wasn't like they were living in Harlem. They were just passing thru. They certainly weren't going to a 'public schools' in Harlem. And I doubt they loafed around ANY Harlem playgrounds or neighborhoods as KIDS. I don't know how old they were when they were going up to Harlem for their herion. But, most of their childhoods, they would have been excluded from seeing anything that is seen or happens in Harlem.

Most of our thoughts and opinons are formed from early chilhood experiences. So, if they were going there in their late teens or early adulthood, their opinons might have been different, than if they were born and raised there. Plus, they were there BUYING HERORIN. I don't think that they would ever want to raise any of THEIR kids in Harlem after seeing what goes on there. And who knows, maybe Bobby's kids are a little racist? You don't have to like or respect a drug dealer. You want his drugs, and he wants your money, that's it.

Like a black person in Garfield, going over to the Foodland in Bloomfield to buy groceries. They buy what they need, and they leave.

As far as the Mexicans, of course that's the reason. The darker skins ones have more 'indian' blood in them (if not all), compared to the lighter skin ones with more 'Spanish' blood lines. But, a 'tell tale' sign of that is, how light or dark that they are.

As far as NYC goes, neighborhoods have NOTHING to do with it. They say things about the ACTUAL race, not what neighborhood that they're from. To say that it's related to a neighborhood, is a 'cop out' to me. That's just a way of trying to hide racism, nothing more.

Yeah, I've got a brother in NYC with the same affliction: Yellow fever, and he's found some pretty good ones in Manhattan and Queens and even way out in Jersey. if you're not careful I will turn you on to them and then you will really be in trouble. Nah, i'm sure you've found some good ones on your own, but maybe you guys could trade notes. And you're right about the Kennedy thing, I thought about it after I posted. They were just passing through and then probably beat a path out of hell to get out of there. After all, I'm sure they were in a hurry to get back to the East Side and make themselves well. Hang in there.

Great minds think alike! LOL Ask your brother about 'Flushing Queens" where I live. There ain't too many white guys around, it's mostly asian people and asian business's. In fact, I'm ALWAYS being accused of being a cop when I walk into a bar (especially the asian ones)LOL.

Did you know that calling an 'asian' person, 'oriental', is like calling a black person the "N word"? That's EXACTLY what a Koreon guy told me and how he WORDED it, at a bar last month. I never knew that. The Koreons also don't like the Japanese (which I also didn't know). It just proves that racism accurs WORLWIDE. Sometimes, I think black people think that they're the only ones who are disciminated against. It happens to ALL races, EVERYWHERE in the world.

And stats can be SO misleading on the topic. Just like the example with Bobby's kids. I spent quite a bit of time in 'Shuman Detention Center' as a kid growing up in Pittsburgh. Most of the time, I was the ONLY white kid on my unit. So, I KNOW how racism goes BOTH ways. It ain't no different if I would have went to a 'public school' in LA. I'm sure that the 'hispanic' kids would have taken shots at me, for just being white. The OP has to realize this before claiming that "Pittsburgh is VERY Racist".

My brother has already told me about the growing Korean population in Queens. You mentioned Flushing, which reminds me of a time when I was a kid. My uncle had an apartment in Flushing, I'm pretty sure it was. Where he lived had been mostly Italian, but in those days in the 70's, was going more and more Puerto Rican. On one of our visits up there we sat on his front porch and watched a pretty good board fight between the Italians and Puerto Ricans. America has always been at the same time the most racist country in the world and the least. The most, because no matter what your particular beef you could always find someone to hate. The least, because we were open to immigrants from every part of the world. That didn't mean there would be no discrimination against them, not by a long shot. I've seen it from both ends too. I think it's safe to say that it's all stupidity, resentment, scapegoating, small minds thinking alike.

Yeah, the label thing, what a bore. You can hardly keep up with the next PC term for whichever race. Like if we call them asian instead of oriental that must mean that we aren't racist. I did know about the hatred of the Japanese that the Koreans have. I used to train at a Japanese dojo in a Korean neighborhood, and considering the way the Japanese conducted themselves in war, it's a wonder that anybody in that part of the world has forgiven them.

Some things are just true. The Japanese were ferocious warriors. Some have explained it by pointing to the homogenous nature of their society, largely due to geography. The problem with stereotyping, or more to the point not stereotyping is like a cliche, it is based on a germ of truth. I'm mostly Italian by blood, but I'm not offended when I hear the mafia thing or the womanizing thing or the shiftless thing, people that would much rather sing a song, get loaded and laid, than get down to business. Of course it's not true for most Italians. But there is a grain of truth to it, or it wouldn't have become a sterotype in the first place.

I'd say the caution with which we're all supposed to conduct ourselves is wrong-minded. The best thing would be if all labels were on the table. If I got called a **** or a wop or a guinea, which I did growing up, it wasn't the word that bothered me it was the intention, the hate or the humor in its delivery. I've been called Italian with hatred and that was a problem.

But look at how the 'NORTH KOREANS' treat their OWN people. Brutal, would be a kind way to describe how them poor people are treated. And that happens from their OWN race. The same could be said about the countries in Africa. Their OWN leaders are WORSE than any enemy from another country.

Years ago, the US gave 3 billion in foreign aid to the country of Hati. 2 billion of that aid, went missing and unaccounted for. How do you starve your OWN people? Hati is the absolute POOREST country in the Western Hemisphere. You try and help, but what are you gonna do? Oh well.......

Having moved here FROM NYC, I can tell ya'... Queens is fast becoming the Hong Kong of the east coast... Flushing and the rest of the Borough is an asian empire, of sorts...

Back to Pittsburgh, though. . . . I think the media feeds into the appearance of the perpetuation of racism here, because every single night, you are bombarded with images of young, black males who either died, killed, or got caught for doing something. It has a way of polarizing viewers into thinking all blacks are thugs and gangbangers...

I challenge you all to count, for one solid week, the number of black vs. white "criminals" you see on the TV news, locally. . . . then think about how YOU may think about race in the local area. . . . of course, there's white criminals as well, but either the numbers are far skewed towards a propensity for blacks to commit crime...or the news isn't covering the true numbers accurately....

Just my 2 cents...

Well I think I can add a comment to your observasion. As I said before in a prior post, I spent alot of time locked up in 'Shuman Detention Center' as a kid. I was ALMOST ALWAYS the ONLY WHITE kid on my unit, ALL the different times I was sent there (which was 5 or 6 times). It's well over 90% of the kids who are locked up in there, are black. Adult prisons ain't much different (unless you go out west were there's alot of hispanic too).

The reasons you see that, blacks are commiting crimes at a WAY higher of a % than the whites. The local media ain't racist, there just reporting what happens. If a black guy robs a bank, are they suppose to tell the public that a white man did it? Look at all the black neighborhoods around Pittsburgh. You think ANY of them would be considered safe? The Hill District, Garefield, Manchester? The list goes on and on. Not to mention areas just outside the city, like Braddock, Homewood, etc.

It's not bias your seeing, it's REALITY. Take your hometown of NYC. Are crimes committed at a higher % of black people than whites? Are the white bankers and accounts of Mannhattan on a crime spree? Now, take the black neighborhoods. What about Harlem? Or East NY? Or South Bronx? Or Jamica, Queens? Or Far Rockaway, Queens? Reality is, that blacks are more likely to commit a crime (especially violent) compared to a white person. These are the facts, racism isn't why you see them on the news more.

I can understand and/or believe that, but with socio-economic caveats to it, since theblack populace almost anywhere is less financially secure than their white counterparts.

That said, I still think that the mere visuals of those blacks caught and processed has a large part in perpetuating the image white America has of them, being thugs and criminals.... even though it's still a small part of the overall ethnic group.

Look at the poor white neighborhoods or areas of Pittsburgh. Do they have the same level of VIOLENCE or CRIME? Take a drive down into West Virginia. You'll see ALOT of VERY poor white people. Check out their MURDER and CRIME rates, see if they even come CLOSE to what you see in black neighborhoods. Poor is poor, somebody that goes to bed hungry and is white, it shouldn't much different if they were black.
