Default Between Pittsburgh and California, PA

My wife just accepted a job at Cal U and we're moving from Indiana. Trying to find an apartment 1/2 way between Cal and Pittsburgh. Any suggestions for decent areas in southern Al. county or Wash county? Also, can anyone give me some info on what kind of a town Washington is? It looks like one of the few relatively developed areas that far south of Pittsburgh. Thanks for the help!

Don't be afraid to look around the Finleyville/Library/Bethel Park area for an apartment. Some decent rental stock down that way and you're close to 43 for a run straight in to California. It'll cost $1.25 each way with the tolls though.

Washington city itself is fairly mundane, typical older city with most of the good housing in town taken by students at the college. As I mentioned in another post, you'll find better areas on the north side of I-70 along 19 and 79. They will be more expensive. You might find something on the other end of Washington along route 40, closer to Pancake and 79 south.

There really isn't much else unless you want to rent a house near or in one of the older towns. Good luck!

If you were to take 43 to California I wouldn't look anywhere south of the Finleyville-Union Township area (Exit 44). You could look at the Finleyville, Union Township, or Nottingham Township areas of Washinton County or South Park, Jefferson Hills, Elizabeth, or Pleasant Hills areas in Allegheny County. The closer you get to the river the more rundown it becomes. You might want to look at Heritage Hills townhouses in Jefferson Hills. They are nice, inexpensive, close to 43, and about halfway between Pittsburgh and California.

I used to live in Monongahela, PA. That is the only town in the Mon Valley between New Eagle and Brownsville that I would live in. Maybe Fisher Heights. You can get on the Mon-Fay Expressway Rt. 43 and be in Little Cal in a short time. It's a toll road, so maybe you can get an "Easy Pass". "Mon City" is old, but it has "soul" and is safe. The railroad is noisy. You get down below I-70 and you start getting into the old patch town coalfields, which you might like if you're a that kind of person. But that is probably not a big rental area.
