I call that area "Park Place", and I used to rent in that area (on the 400 block of East End Avenue, which is parallel to and one block east of Braddock). Here is a link to a community group in the area with a map:

Anyway, Park Place is an interesting area: mostly it is a little more transitional than Regent Square to the south, but it is also more affordable, and it is still close to Frick Park and has easy access to a lot of the East End. As a result it has become popular with grad students and even some young professional types.

It is tough getting good crime statistics on Park Place because it is an "unofficial" neighborhood, and it is a very small area at the border of two much larger and somewhat different areas (Point Breeze, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, and Wilkinsburg, a city just outside Pittsburgh). Personally, though, I doubt the crime is much higher in Park Place than in Point Breeze or Regent Square, which would make it pretty safe as far as city neighborhoods go.

In sum, I wouldn't hesistate to recommend Park Place to people looking for a relatively affordable East End neighborhood. That said, nearby Regent Square, Point Breeze, and Squirrel Hill are a bit nicer--but also more expensive.

We live in the 300 block of South Braddock and love it. I especially love being so close to the park and near Reynolds Street. Our only complaint would be how busy South Braddock is. It seems to be non stop no matter what day or time, and even worse now with I 376 construction underway. Penndot feels they have to reroute traffic through our already congested neighborhood, and people don't know enough to find alternate routes
