There are a number of factors as to what went wrong, but the final straw was the '68 riots. With white flight already complete, the riots are what started black flight as well, and that's when the massive disinvestment really started.

And to think Pittsburgh had it easy... the '68 riots basically led to about 80% of Detroit looking like a flatter version of the Hill District. April 4th 1968 changed the American urban landscape big-time.

I love The Hill, and I don't think it's nearly as dangerous as most people conceive it to be. Here's a few more pics of it

I am fascinated with the decline of old neighborhoods and the change in times. It def. seems that the 1968 riots affected many urban neighborhoods. And before that with the Civic Arena being built, the feeling of seclusion from the main city makes sense too. it's funny how a building can create such a psychological change.

Should a picture thread be created to capture the legacy of this city?

The 68 riots were the straw, the hill was in decline long before this due to other economic reasons. When the riots hit they burned whatever businesses were left. The rest is history.

It is not, I have lived there for over 20+ years. Take note, very rarely does innocent by standers get killed on the Hill. It is a fact as of this posting not one person from the hill in the last 10 years has been killed for no reason
