Hi there,
My husband was just offered a job that we really can't turn down. We
would like to find some rural area's surrounding Pittsburg, where land is reasonable. He will be driving to some of his offices and flying to others, so it can be really rural. Any help would be really appreciated.

You might investigate Ligonier, Pa. It's in Westmoreland County, about 55 miles east of Pittsburgh. It's an amazingly beautiful wooded historic area. It's not far from Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, skiing and white water rafting. It's also close to the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport.

I wonder if it's too late to help this person since it's March already.

Your request has Beaver County written all over it. Plenty of land, close to the airport, and a nice highway. Chippewa, New Sewickley, raccoon, and South Beaver to name a few townships.

Ligonier is great, but a bit of a haul into town. Things thin out quicker to the north of Pittsburgh than any other direction imho so I would look up there. Find a map of Butler County and throw a dart! Mars, Zelienople, Evans City- are all options. There was a thread on the PA site started by somebody (cali - something) who was gifted a building lot in Butler Co. that she wasn't necessarily thrilled with because it was too rural. You might try to look for that thread....

I grew up in Beaver County, and would agree with the rural nature of the northern and western county. Chippewa Twp is pretty suburban. Big Beaver, Darlington, New Galilee areas are all more rural and all on city-data to check out.

Marshall Township
South Fayette Township
Brighton Township
Elizabeth Township
New Sewickley Township
Smith Township
Frazer Township
etc.

... There are actually a lot of rural areas within an hour's drive or so of the city itself.

If he's flying regularly, it would be best to stick to rural areas to the west of the city since the airport is near the western side of the allegheny county border.

Good point. I don't know how those folks on the east side who have to use the airport a lot stand it. West + rural generally means Beaver County. It is very easy to access the airport from Rt 60, which runs west (and free) to Chippewa Twp (from the airport), then mostly north from thereon as a toll road.
