Yeah, hearing of it. I would agree with. It was a large industrial center of the region. But I never been there, and I been to a lot of PA towns.

When you're talking to other former Pittsburgh residents in a far away state and discover that's something you have in common you might say, I'm from Pittsburgh too, Indiana, which is a lot farther than Beaver Falls. Pittsburgh is a reference point. Joe Namath put Beaver Falls on rthe map so others who have never been here may have heard of it, but not Indiana PA. We who live in or near the city don't consider Beaver Valley towns as Pgh. They identify with us and choose to believe they are a part when they really aren't, but what's the harm?

Yeah, but don't people watch the news? Or read anything "local?" I may have not been to every town in the metro areas I've lived in but I am certainly familiar with what is around the cities (even cities I've never lived in) mostly because of the news.

^^^I agree with the above. And Beaver Falls is 30 miles from Pittsburgh, not 40. Beaver County is part of the Pittsburgh MSA. When Pittsburghers want to talk about their area of influence, they're happy to include us.

north hills vs south hills
I was raised in South hills and my wife, north hills.. I now live in North hills. To her credit, I think the city commute is much easier from the north hills with 279, and the people are definately friendly. For the kids, you can't beat Hampton school district. I even opened my office in the North hills.. go figure, North wins over the south again.

Gun battles? No.
High school football? Hell yes.

It is like nothing ive ever seen before. 5 or 6 storys, steaples, all stone, all the glass was custom made and imported from italy, and now they have the yard done... the gate to the driveway is probley worth more than everything i own. Water fountains, a lot of extras..its done up very nice.
Ok heres the link to the picture...keep in mind this is from before it was done, so the yard and gates and all that arent put in yet.

I've never been in New Alexandria, but I've driven past it so I know what you mean.

As to the OP, I've lived in both the North and the South over the years and liked both.
If you looking for a great education and more of a urban feel, I would go for Mt.Lebanon. Had a great time living there, get a good bang for your buck when it comes to taxes. If you work downtown 9-5 the T is the only way to go. Plus, depending on where you live you are within walking distance to some good restaurants and bars. Dormont was fun too, back when the South Hills Theater was open I saw some great concerts. However, if your job calls for you to DRIVE downtown, I'd look at the North, the traffic is nuts.
Currently living in that diverse area known as McCandless where we have a wide variety of white people. Again, a good school system and while I wish the taxes were lower, this area is well maintained.
I think your real estate dollar will go farther in the North, it's more suburban in nature, but the lots are generally bigger than what you'll find in the South.
My two cents.

I know exactly what you mean. My family has lived in Pittsburgh their entire lives and they have all always lived on the east side of town and always say I live far because I am on a different side of town. Most of them would get lost driving to my house. I don't consider myself to be the "average pittsburger" because not only do I often visit all different sides of the city I lived on three of the four sides of town Penn Hills(east), Wilkinsburg(east), West Mifflin(south), South Park(south) and Moon(West), I need one more west and two norths and I will be finish lol.

Do more minorities live in the North Hills or South Hills and which neighborhoods?
