My fiance may or may not be taking a job in Pittsburgh. We are a young couple with a 2 1/2 year old son. We would be looking to ethier rent a home or an apartment. Of corse must be a safe neighborhood with a good crime rate and AWESOME public schools, or Catholic schools in the area. I work as at target for now so it would be very nice if there was a target within 15 minutes driving distance.
Finding a good, affordable place to live is one of the factors in deciding if he will take the job or not. Any help is greatly appreciated! ![]() |

There are a lot of areas in Pittsburgh that potentially could meet your needs, including several Targets scattered around the region. So, it might be helpful if you gave us a bit more information about the location of your husband's possible job and your preferences (e.g., do you like historic neighborhoods or new neighborhoods, close-in or father out, do want to use public transit, and so on).

Finding a house to rent with your other requirements isn't likely. City or suburbs? Maximum drive time to his job? What price per month are you comfortable paying? Is old ok or you want newer? We've got a lot of older homes turned into nicely remodeled apartments inside. That way you might have some yard as opposed to living in an apartment complex. Take a look at Squirrel Hill and Greenfield (city) and Monroeville (suburbs). Are you familiar with craigslist.com?

His job is downtown but he drives over 25 miles to work as it is so thats not really an issue. I prefer historical areas but our price range, as it stands, is $500-$700 a month soI dont know if historical is possible. Also I'd like for us to be in a suburb because through my experience they have better schools, but thats Ohio so I dont know what it's like in PA. And Ive never visited craigslist before.

You are right: $500-700/month for a house or large apartment in a neighborhood with good schools means something in or close to the city is probably going to be very hard to find. I happen to be the wrong person to help with that search, but I think with that additional information some other people can likely provide some suggestions.

I don't know too much about schools, but I'm thinking the Dormont/Scott Township/Greentree area might be a good place to start looking.

You should look at Oakmont. Oakmont is a lovely historical town with sidewalks and a good public school system. There is also a Catholic school and a Lutheran school, and there are some excellent preschool programs in the area. Oakmont is about 13 miles northeast of downtown proper, and takes anywhere from 25-45 minutes during rush hour to get downtown. There is also a brand-new Target that just opened 5 minutes away (a few more during rush hour with Hulton Bridge traffic) in Harmarville. Oakmont is right on the Allegheny river; Harmarville is on the other side. Hulton Bridge goes from Oakmont to Harmarville. Oakmont has a nice mix of houses and apartments, an extremely low crime rate, and may well be what you're looking for in terms of suburban amenities in a historic small town. Do look at Craigslist - I'm seeing both some houses and apartments in your price range.

Oakmont is a very good suggestion, and I might note neighboring Verona shares the same school district. Verona isn't quite as upscale as Oakmont, but that may also give you more options in your price range.
