Hello All...I am a small business owner and recently divorced mother of 4. We currently live in Philadelphia, but would like to relocate (crime, housing prices skyrocketing, etc), maybe to Pittsburgh. Could anyone please advise me on the best neighborhoods to live in? I'm looking for a nice, middle-class neighborhood with diversity (we're black). Schools and shopping are also a huge concern because I have teenagers.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.xoxo

There are many different neighborhoods in Pittsburgh that might fit your needs. So it might be helpful if you gave us an idea of some of your preferences (e.g., city versus suburbs, older versus newer, and so on), plus a rough sense of your housing budget.

I apologize for my lack of details...I'm looking for an area that is not too woodsy, but not too urban either...nice yards...semi detached homes...not too far from downtown and public transportation...the age of the home doesn't really matter as long as the area is nice...I'm looking to spend less than 200k...Thanks again

Based on your requirements, I think some of the inner suburbs might be a good fit ... unfortunately I am not quite familiar enough with them to comment on issues such as diversity, but hopefully some other people will help out (we seem to have at least one or two people for each different part of the area).

My neighbor moved from Fla to Mt. Lebanon district and loves it. She says the schools are great!

Mt Lebanon is a former "streetcar suburb" built up in the early-20th Century, and today is once again served by the T (Pittsburgh's modest light rail system). In addition to its well-regarded schools it has nice historic housing stock and a popular walkable commercial district.

I see two potential downsides to Mt Lebanon for the OP, however. First, it is popular enough that the OP may have trouble finding suitable housing within her budget (that's not a bad budget for Pittsburgh in general, but Mt Lebanon is getting toward the more expensive part of the local scale). Second, I believe Mt Lebanon is predominantly white (like maybe 96% white, and less than 1% black). I don't think that necessarily means Mt Lebanon is going to be intolerant of a black family, but the OP did mention diversity as a criterion.

Look a bit futher south in washington county. Cannonsburg, North Stabane township, houston, etc... both Cannon MAc schools district and Chartiers Houston are good solid districts and they have more diversity than Mt Lebo, Upper STC and Peters.

Washington County would be out of the "close to downtown and public transportation" criteria, though.

I agree with Brian, maybe areas like Dormont, Greentree, or Castle Shannon south of the city would be appropriate, or Bellvue or Brighton Heights north of the city.
