ohhhhhhhh.. Sad that they had to move the plant from Latrobe. I know in the 80ies and 90ies in NYC it was a popular Beer because of it;s affordable price.

Anyway, one time we were up there looking for a bite to eat, we saw the sign, drove in, looked around, saw the storefronts, then the townhouses or condos or whatever they were, and said in unison, "what is hell is this??". Are we in a neighborhood or a strip mall? Or some bizarre experiment? I think we dined at Zia's that day.

Knowing now how good their beer is, I'm going to have to go back and find the courage to go in.

Stoudtberg Village is "copy" of a Bavarian (southern German) village. If you ever visit Germany, you'll find that this is pretty much what it looks like in each small town you could visit, and yes, those are the typical stores/restaurants you'd find. Nothing weird, just European old-world style, which, by the way, doesn't change too quickly. It is in an odd location, and unfortunately doesn't appear to get great business, but nevertheless, they are adding 100 units/60 buildings.

If you aren't looking for something that is very specifically Pittsburgh, The Erie Brewing Company makes a great IPA called "Misery Bay".

I would highly recommend that you check this place out:

Barley's And Hop's Home Page

It is located near Castle Shannon. They claim to carry something like 80% of the worlds beer... and I'd believe it. Best selection I have ever seen, bar none.

Yeah, but since the brewery was then, in turn, bought up by Sam Adams, I don't feel so much like I am loosing a son as I am gaining a daughter.

MOST of your larger distributors (drive-in beer stores) will have a good variety. I found Arrogant Bastard and three Philosophers, as well as my favorite Lagunitas IPA on Noblestown Road in Greentree.... They also have free tastings there on friday nights... imagine that; a drive-in beerstore with free tastings, right in your car!!!!!

Sharp Edge is best known for their Belgian beer selection, but they're drink in, not take out, and they don't seem to have what you're looking for: Best Belgian Beer List in the USA (http://www.sharpedgebeer.com/beer.htm - broken link)

All these replies and NO LOVE for a true PITTSBURGH brewed beer.............IRON CITY. It's a very good LAGER beer. I grew up in Lawrenceville and we call it "Vitamin I". Years ago it was, shall we say.........."an acquired taste" however for many years now Iron City is a great beer. Taste it before you judge it. People will bad mouth Iron and they have never tried it!

Another very good beer is Straub, out of St. Mary's, PA.
