Hello. I moved to Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. So far it is a very nice city and I am enjoying being here...as long as I do not have to travel on 379 much.

I have some questions that I hope some folks here can answer.

First, does anyone know of a really good vet near Swisshelm Park? My dog is a small one, about 7 pounds.

Second, does anyone know a reliable garage, or mechanic, who wont charge an arm and a leg?

I guess that is it for now. Thanks in advance.

Good questions and I'm sure you'll get some good responses. I just recently moved here myself, and although I haven't needed the Vet yet, I can say there are plenty of good (and cheap) mechanics around...

Try near the Greentree / Carnegie area, down around Route 50 / Washington Pike... also a bunch on highway 51 (both, South Side)...

Leger Auto in Oakmont is totally honest. If you take your car there for a state inspection and nothing else is wrong with it, when you pick it up that's all you'll be paying for. He doesn't throw on stuff you really didn't need like Monroe the chain or other small shops. My neighbor and I have been taking our cars there for years. We are hoping he doesn't take an early retirement.

People I've known with common pets use Fox Chapel Vet Hospital. Probably they are expensive.

We live in Regent Square, which is close enough to Swisshelm Park that this may be helpful.

For a mechanic, we use Frick Park Auto (at Forbes and Braddock) and have been happy with them.

For vets, we use Greenfield Veterinary Hospital (on Greenfield Ave) for normal stuff, and AVETS in Monroeville for surgery or emergencies.

Two suggestions--we've found both to be honest and dependable:
1) Homer's, on Murray Ave at Lilac St. This is Greenfield or Squirrel Hill depending on whether you consider Murray or Beechwood the boundary there.
2) Constantine's Garage in Oakland, tucked behind the CMU Software Engineering Institute and the Mellon Institute.
