Default Edgewood Rules Oppressive?

I'm considering buying a home in Edgewood. I understand the millage and wage taxes, but I'd like to hear more about the rules. Is it true that I could not have overnight guests without registering them in advance? How strict are the rules about lawn care and other external property issues? Could I have a wildflower garden in my front yard?

A quick look at the Edgewood official site leaves me with the impression of a community policing its borders against "undesirables" in neighboring Wilkinsburg and Swissvale.

There are some lovely homes in Edgewood, and comments on this forum have been positive, but I'm wondering if my q u e e r interracial family with frequent houseguests would feel welcome there.

Do you live in Edgewood? How do you feel about the rules?

Thanks.

Thanks for the link -- I did check that site out before posting. I do mean parking permits -- I should have been more clear. If I understand correctly, an overnight guest could not park overnight in Edgewood without getting a parking permit in advance. I lived in Chicago in a neighborhood with residential parking permits, but you could buy a pack of temporary permits for your guests. I don't find anything like that in Edgewood.

How stringently are these nighttime parking regulations enforced? Is there a temporary permit? Are there other rules in Edgewood that folks find annoying, or do the borough regulations generally contribute positively to quality of life?

Yes, if you have guests staying over and they park on the street without being registered they will be ticketed and/or towed. I don't think there's a fee to register, it's just an expected courtesy and the cops don't have to wonder what's up with the uinfamiliar cars on the street. If you live there it's for your benefit to follow the rules.

Definitely.

I doubt anyone anywhere would welcome that.

I actually would welcome it! I don't live in Edgewood, but I have no problem with ***** interracial families. We're white and straight, but our family and friends represent the entire spectrum. I would be uncomfortable living somewhere that my friends and family weren't welcome. Edgewood is one of the areas I'm considering and I'd like to know too. It seemed like a very nice community when I visited in 2006.

Default unwelcome in Edgewood

Wow, Peter Rabbit. i guess I have my answer. Is it the fact that I'm homosexual, or that my partner is black, or that my mother visits often that you find so objectionable in a neighbor?

Edgewood neighbors, do you agree with Peter Rabbit? Are interracial couples and GLBT folks really not wanted in your neighborhood?

I don't live in Edgewood, but I think that's a neighborhood that would be most open to all kinds of families and their guests. Peter Rabbit's comment is his own opinion--I don't think it reflects the opinions of most people on this forum or in Pittsburgh.

I would bet though that people would give your partner a second look just because he is black and its near and area where there are people that cause problems that are the same race. Unless he dresses like a preppy kinda deal. Probably less of a look if they are female or dressed in a really conservative look.

Most places I have lived here have a resident parking prmt and the guest one. You just buy them both. You can re-use it. Its usually just a little card your hang in your window. I wouldnt skip it. Parking tickets and tow is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I dont think people would care about guests at all. I mean..as long as your mom doesnt yell to you from the front lawn while blasting the car stereo, bla bla bla ...
Its a quiet neighborhood. But there seems to always be people out walking around and walking dogs. I Think PR is refering to loud people that do the same thing and its annoying. I read ***** as wierdo...not gay. Perhaps he did too.

Definitely the mom visiting often....

I don't live in PA anymore, but honestly -- I've never heard of getting parking permits for overnight guests, except in Berkeley. Or as we call Berzerkley.... You live in a town, not an Homeowner's Association.
