Appalachian Gothic (post industrial) with Eastern Eurpoean ambiance.
Wow. I feel like I need to consult my architecture and geography text books.
If I were to judge the Pittsburgh book based on that title, I would be compelled to pick it up and give it a go.

I refuse to live in San Francisco, and from what I hear (and from what I know, I have been to Seattle, of course!), Seattle is a perfect fit for a young gay couple.
I can't really say I've found Seattle to be bland, but maybe I will after a time. I'll just move again!!
I'm certainly not bland, but I am a yuppie.. actually we're guppies, so we may find Seattle to our liking!! I know there is a very vibrant gay club and entertainment culture there.

You can definitely find that in Portland too... plus your money goes a lot farther in Portland.
Portland's mayor elect, Sam Adams, is openly gay and super progressive.
Seattle is beautiful but incredibly expensive compared to Portland... Seattly is not far from bay area costs now. Public transit in Seattle is sub-par and due to all of the bodies of water, it makes getting around difficult.
But if you have money and a car and don't worry about DUI, then none of that really matters.

Thankfully, for us, money won't be an issue. Even more amazing is that his mother who adores us is a flight attendant for Delta so Josh flies for free anywhere in the country (with HEAVY discounts world-wide) and I get buddy passes which are less than $100 for any city in America, first-class!
Fun times!
We plan on doing some INSANE traveling, so I imagine Seattle is only a stepping stone until we find the city that is perfect. Maybe we'll decide it's Seattle!
I just love the entire feel and vibe from the Pacific Northwest, although, I imagine Seattleites are a tad snobbier than most peoples from that area. The only reason Portland wasn't on my radar more than Seattle was because of the skyline. I love having an amazing skyline to see from downtown (I think Seattle EASILY has one of the best in America).
What stupid reason's to live in a city. Has bodies of water nearby? Check. Has a beautiful skyline? Check.
None of that really matters in real-life!!
Blah!! This thread isn't about me and my move. From what I can gather and know, Portland, Seattle, and Pittsburgh are all very lovely places to live.

I don't know about gay marriage in WA...2/3 of the state is VERY conservative. I'd bet on Oregon passing it first.

Geography is another thing I love about Pittsburgh. It's not the Midwest, the South or even really the Northeast, but it's an hour or two from all of them.

Geography:
Yeah, I like the fact that if I moved to PGH I would have Toronto, NYC, Philly, and Baltimore all within like six or seven hour car ride.
Plus Chicago is only like 7 or 8.
(all numbers based on mapquest - not experience).
Is there an AMTRAK (or other train) to NYC from Pittsburgh?
What is the PGH airport like - can you get regular flights out of the airport and fly directly to other major cities or are your absolutely destined to stop in Chicago or Atlanta?
BTW: thanks to everyone for responding. It's really helped me wrap my head around the idea of moving there.

The Supreme Court of Washington said although they don't believe it was illegal per say to prevent gay people from getting married, they wrote that they believed it was unfair and unethical not to do so and the justices highly encouraged the state to reconsider their marriage laws - albeit they obviously didn't go as far as to directly order the state to allow marriage.
Since then, the state promptly passed domestic partnership and in the works is gay marriage which will be revisited in the near future. We'll see! Maybe Oregon will be first.

Well, I wish you were moving here, guylocke. We could go out for drinks. I hope you enjoy Seattle. My high-school sweetheart, from Beaver Falls, was stationed in Seattle in the Navy and stayed there ever after.

You can be sure when I find myself visiting Denver (and I assure you, I will) you will be the first person who knows about it!!

There is Amtrak in Pittsburgh, and it does go to NYC: Amtrak in Pennsylvania (broken link)
The airport is decent. It's no Dulles or O'Hare or anything like that, but you can definitely get direct flights to many major U.S. cities, including Philly, D.C., Chicago, Dallas, Minneapolis, Phoenix, NYC, and so forth. You can also get direct flights to *some* smaller places, depending on the carrier, like Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale, Salt Lake City, Memphis, etc. However, one thing you can't get there is direct international flights, which has caused me some irritation in the recent past (because I *hate* the Philly airport, which is where many international trips beginning in Pgh seem to have a stop-over).

Great! I'm sure my daughters know all the hip bars in Denver and Boulder between the two of them!
Yeah, Pittsburgh airport: It can be expensive for me to fly thre b/c it's not a hub for any of the airlines that have hubs in Denver, but it's a nice facility. I would say a little out of the way for those on the east side, no?
