What exactly makes it a fluke? Do people usually shoot random people in the parking lot? No. Shootings in this area happen every year, so I don't know why anybody would call it a "fluke".
Regardless, the OP shouldn't be worried too much about it. I never avoided the waterfront at night and I'm pretty paranoid about these sorts of things.

The Waterfront is probably the safest shopping area in Pittsburgh right now due to these recent incidents. I never had a problem there and I've been there many times til 2 or 3 in the morning.
Damon's was a robbery gone wrong.
The shooting at Eat N Park - I believe the shooter knew the guy. They had an altercation before or something.
in 2005 there was a shooting at the movie theatre but the shooter was from Aliquippa and shot somebody from Wilkinsburg...totally un-related to Homestead and maybe gang or drug related (can't remember for sure) but I believe they were seeing "Get Rich or Die Tryin" if I remember correctly.
And then I think there was recently a robbery at another restaurant before these shootings but that's all that I can remember. I wouldn't exactly call them "flukes" but it's not like the shooters thought "I am going to go shoot somebody at the Waterfront today."
I hope these crimes don't impact business as this is a nice center and I would like to see it stay open and even grow.

The fact that there were two in the past two weeks.
Two in a year is normal.
Two in a month is a fluke.

That's what i was gonna say! That was my real question. As I said, I worked in French 1/4 and, even there, 2 shootings in 2 weeks would cause a stir.
Oh, amd thanx Dog. I pride myself on my own holding abilities

Take it from me I live near the waterfront so it is a "FLUKE". As someone stated earlier that IF requested police officers will escort you to your car. The incident at Eat n Park was a long standing beef between the two involved , from what I've heard. As for the Damions store, ask yourself this question why in the world would you have two people closing a store. There are cops down there all the time you'll be safe.

The fact that it's well known that security guards will escort folks to their car and cops are there all the time indicates a need to be fearful. Aside from that, the place is a dump.

Security guards will also escort students to their cars on Duquesne's campus, yet it's consistently ranked one of the safest campuses. I don't think it indicates a need for fear - but rather an assurance of safety.
And it being a dump - your opinion I suppose. I don't think it's the greatest place ever, but I think it's far from a dump.

I stopped going there years ago. Too crowed, hard to access, and now I can add another reason --- shootings. Two is no FLUKE in my opinion. People being murdered is hardly something that should be minimized, or brushed off.

Are you guys serious this type of stuff happens everyday? Or you guys living under a rock? I've lived in just about all the places you guys consider "ghetto" or the "Dump". Things happen and just doesn't make the news at all. I hear things about fox chapel, Sq. Hill, Forest Hills, South hills ect. You get my point. The way I see if dumb***** wanted to cheat, lie, and steal it'll happen no matter if there is police present or not. I can say that the waterfront could be over crowed at times but, It beats going to Centry III or Monroeville malls.
