Shootings
So, I just started bartending down at the Waterfront and heard yesterday that there have been two unrelated shootings in the area in as many weeks, both taking place in restaurant parking lots. Is this normal or just a fluke meant to scare the bejeezus out of me. I know Homestead isn't the safest area in the world but I didn't think I had to be afraid to walk to my car at night.

It is very disturbing! I left Baltimore to get away from that senseless behavior. I've been to the Waterfront a few times and It didn't have a good vibe. Statistically I wouldn't worry. Your chances of being a victim are infinitesimal. Trust, law enforcement is not going to let the thug culture ruin a major shopping/dining/entertainment destination.

THIS IS A FLUKE!!! My friends and I made frequent late night Steak 'N Shake runs during college (only 2 years ago), and I frequently go to movies there at night now. Even with the recent shootings, I'm not afraid of the Waterfront. I think they could use some more security there for sure, but these shootings are so out of the ordinary for there that I still feel pretty safe.

That is really good to know. Chuckles. I had never had a "danger, danger!" vibe there but the recent shootings ruffled my feathers for obvious reasons. I am sure the cops will be out in full force now though. The people that were shot were employees, I believe, but the last they want is some family on a shopping trip getting slain.
From what I understand, the one this weekend at Damon's was supposed to be a robbery attempt on a dushwasher taking out the trash but, supposedly, the guy chased the kid up to the door and proceeded to stick his arm in after the kid got inside and shot him twice. If that is how it happened, it sounds a little to ambitious to be anything but personal. I am also made to understand that the one at Eat N Park was a domestic dispute. I bartended in the French Quarter for 5 years and it is dangerous as can be. Guess I am getting older though and my invincibility is wearing off

With all of this happening, I am sure there will be a lot more security down there. But I feel safe going down there any time. Seems to be a fluke.

You're right, Homestead isn't the safest area. I shop down there A LOT, especially Target and Giant Eagle, and the businesses definitely attract a lot of trash and ghetto-fabulous folks.
That being said, I have never particularly felt unsafe and I don't think you need to worry over near Longhorn. It's good to be concerned and cautious, but I don't think you need to be fearful.

This is ashame. Especially when the victim was just a 19 year old, who was probably just doing a part time job at Damens. There is no reason to shoot a 19 year old with his whole life ahead of him for what, a few hundred dollars for some crackhead to buy drugs? I hope they find this scum bag, and lock him up forever.

Although disturbing and nerve racking, it is a fluke
Edit; Also, The Waterfront's private security will escort employees to their vehicles at night if you request it.

Tis indeed a fluke. Besides, the original poster is from the New Orleans area, so I think she can handle her own
