I definitely think all the wilderness-in-the-city stuff people mentioned above helps make Pittsburgh unique.

But for something that really gets overlooked--I think many of our economically-depressed neighborhoods have incredible potential. So much so that while my short term interest is in seeing economic development spread into those neighborhoods (as is already happening in places like East Liberty and Wilkinsburg), in the long run I am actually concerned about making sure the current residents have a fair opportunity to share in those developments.

Oooh, I forgot about the turkeys! I don't know if they are in the city limits, but there are certainly lots of wild turkeys in the South Hills. A flock of turkeys hangs out in South Park, often with the buffalo. And a low flying turkey almost hit my car around Peters Township...on Thanksgiving day no less. lol

OK, here are a few of my favs:

Mountain biking single track trails just minutes from downtown.

PNC Park

Kayaking on the rivers under a full moon.

Being able to drive a half hour from downtown and go deer hunting.

The WDVE morning show.

Southside bar crawls

The fact that Ben Roethlisberger had a ham sammich for lunch is a big news story ha ha.

The fact that I can buy a brand new house for ~300 grand.

Having many big city amenities(great museums, theater, universities) without many of the big city hassles (high cost of living, congestion).

Playing hockey at Schenley park.

The fact that the world comes to a standstill on Sundays for Steelers games.

The countless views of the city and terrain.

The inclines.

Exploring the Strip District.

And of course, tailgating for almost any event.

I live in Beechview (within the city limits) and every so often I'll have a turkey in my backyard. It always blows my mind

Pierogies...I need 'em. Where do you guys suggest I go. It would help if someone knows a place up my way (West View) but I'll go anywhere for the best!
That Diners and Dives show on the Food Network just had a segment on a place in Blawnox that has great pierogies. Fireside or Firelight or something like that. Anyway, the making of the pierogies involves a pound of butter, which both amazed and repulsed me at the same time.

Last fall I saw a wild turkey wandering around on Bouquet Street in Oakland!

I love the in-city wildlife here too. And there are animals here I never saw out west - groundhogs, cardinals, turkeys.

I live there now -- well in Oakland, CA -- and I agree. I will miss some aspects of here when I leave -- but I will leave.

Oh -- and I never see grinnies out here... I miss grinnies.

I should translate from "PA Dutch" to English -- chipmunks.

Most snakes in the area are poisonless, so don't worry.

Ive noticed all this talk about pierogis. I grew up with polish food throughout my life here in Houston (mom's side is polish). Are there other any polish restaurants that serve things other than pierogis i.e. kotlet schabowy, bigos, golabki, krupnik, etc.? I have been to a polish tavern, Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, which I loved. Cant find Zywiec here in Texas, but they had it. Such a tasty brew.
