Thinking of moving
Hi everyone
My husband and I currently live on Long Island and we really want to leave. The schools are a big concern for us here. We had planned to move to Penn. 3 years ago but family issues forced us to stay here. Now we are ready to move and I was hoping someone had good information on the areas in the Pittsburg area.
Thanks to anyone that can help

The schools are good in Pittsburgh. I looked at high school data once & saw that Mt. Lebanon high school was nationally ranked. Fox Chapel School district also gets excellent scores. Fox Chapel has a lot of nice houses (where deceased governor John Heinz used to live...all of his money is with Teresa Heinz Kerry...real estate is high in that area). Mt. Lebanon & Sewickly areas have "older" money.
North Hills and North Allegheny are good schools (and large schools) in more affordable areas (still nice areas, though).
Pgh is in Allegheny county and the taxes are high. Some people choose to live in neighboring Butler or Beaver counties.
Here are some scores (I think based on SAT's?) rated among other PA high schools:
99 mt lebanon
99 north allegheny
98 fox chapel
97 upper saint claire
97 hampton township
96 freedom
95 somerset
94 bethel park
94 peters township
93 north hills
93 sewickley
93 greater latrobe
91 penn hills
90 greensburg salem
89 butler

I too used to live on LI (Port Jefferson) and have been here in the Burgh for 14 years now. We will hopefully be moving to NC (will find out this week). Pittsburgh does have much to offer and I can speak for the schools in Mt Lebanon (that’s where I live) for my kids have high honors. So keep an eye out for a house for sale in Mt Lebanon - it’s move in condition and minutes from the “T” and downtown.
Best of luck to you!

Just don't move into the actual City of Pittsburgh. School District is not that great compared to the suburbs, unless you're planning on sending you kids to a catholic or private school. Then move into Squirrel HIll, close to everything cultural and sports related and closed to University of Pittsburgh

One of the counties people are moving to from Allegheny is Westmoreland. We moved here two years ago to help my folks who have since passed away. We are getting ready to put our house on the market. Westmoreland (North Huntingdon) has some of the better schools. Let me know if you are looking for a great house.....wish we could take it with us when we move back south. We had it built by an unbelieveable great builder.

Pittsburgh public schools for an urban school district generally compares well with other urban districts. There are some good and some bad schools throughout it.
Outside the city there are pleanty of different school districts to choose from.
There area also any number of private and parochial schools. A typical parochial school runs ~3k or less a year here, and most subsidize families, ie if you have 2 kids it might be a few $$$ more, buy by 3rd or 4th kid they don't charge you any extra.
There are also higher end private schools who's tuition is intentionally set high just to keep the riff raff out, if that is your thing.
Most of the suburban schools are pretty good, and property taxes fund school districts, so the more $$ and more expensive housing is in a given area, generally the school has more facilities and offereings.

I am from Pittsburgh now trying to move to Ohio due to taxes. They are thinking about raising another 10 cents for gas and they are thinking of raising state taxes again too.
I can not afford it. rental and homes in Ohio are much much cheaper than what I pay. I live in Crafton Pa. Our rent now is 650 a month for a 3 bedroom place, in ohio we can get a 5 bedroom place for 450 a month. I would rather deal with older home and cheaper taxes.
Good luck if you are really moving to Pgh. I will always be a die hard Pgh girl but hate the taxes.
