There are a lot of volunteer organizations that would welcome you and where you would meet people. One that I can think of is Pittsburgh Cares, which recruits volunteers for community service work. Their website is pittsburghcares.org From there you could branch off and get to know some people to do things with like movies, plays, or hang out.

There's also sites like meetin.org (Pittsburgh Events - Fun Events Free Events Make new friends in Pittsburgh, Meet new people in Pittsburgh - MEETin.org), meetup.com (Pittsburgh, PA Meetup Groups - Meetup.com) and Craigslist--look under groups, activities, strictly platonic, etc.

Just walk around some of the bigger and busier neighborhood business areas, stop in a coffee shop or bar, people watch, say hello to someone

I had a friend who used to go to Parents Without Partners meetings. He'd bring home a new girl every couple weeks until he found one he wanted to stay with awhile. The volunteer idea is a good one. If you know of a place that would be cool to work at because it could fulfill your needs, everyone loves a volunteer and you can usually dictate your own days and hours. If you're valuable you could get hired full time.

I'll get dinner, go shopping and see a movie by myself. Sometimes I'll go to a bar and people watch and talk.

There are tons of things to do in my local (North Side) neighborhood.
Check the Mattress Factory or Warhol Museum or AIR (Artists Image Resource) websites. Personally, I think AIR has the best parties and best music.
Go to one of these functions and act interested. Ask questions.
You will be sucked up in no time!
