Well for one, a "tunnel walk" from SS to downtown? What tunnel anywhere in the city has pedestrian access? Plus the only bridge that one can safely walk on from SS to downtown is the Smithfield bridge, and the SS end of that bridge isn't particularly close to the residential part of the neighborhood.

The Armstrong Tunnel has a pedestrian walk. It runs from Second Avenue at the South 10th Street Bridge to Forbes Avenue. The South 10th Street Bridge has a pedestrian walk in addition to a staircase to Duquesne University. Students from Duquesne University and Point Park College walk it safely all the time.

Yeah, and that the only neighborhood really within walking distance is the lower hill. Anyway I have a story about the Hill District. The first time I really started to explore the hill it was about midnite and I drove up center ave. (heading east from downtown). I knew centre was where all the action was so I proceeded. I saw the usual pimps, gangstas, and hustlas, junkies etc... But then I got to an intersection (I believe centre and kirkpacktrick?)
My heart sank as there were literally 100 people just hanging around. I mean like 25 people on each corner and its like a five way intersection. So hear I am at a red light at midnite surrounded by the scariest looking people I've ever saw. No cops, nothing but junkies and thugs. I quickly locked my doors and prayed for a green light. Nevertheless it became one of my regular sight seeing spots. This proved to me that Pittsburghs ghettos can rank right up there with some of the worst in the country. Peace!

Hmm, never noticed the Armstrong Tunnel had a pedestrian crosswalk. Ya learn something new every day. Still, walking from the SS across the 10th st. Bridge and through the tunnel and coming up next to the Duquesne campus and heading into the heart of downtown from there seems like a hell of a walk to me. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh is not a bike-friendly town, otherwise that would make a nice little bike ride...

Suppose a white guy like me in a decent vehicle, who's not completely familiar with the city, accidentally ends up in the hill district in, say, daylight hours. What happens? Anything?

I've driven into the Hill District many times during daylight hours to drop off co-workers. Nothing happened. I even continued through the Hill District once instead of turning around. Even though I know the city, I didn't know my way so I'm sure I had that "I'm lost" look on my face. Still, nothing happened. In any rough neighborhood, daylight is a slight risk; after dark is a huge risk.

I forgot to add that when you drive through any dangerous neighborhood during the day, you still need to be smart about watching your surroundings and careful to make sure that you don't allow your car to get boxed in by other vehicles so you can get away. Never pull up closely behind another vehicle. You want enough distance between you and other vehicles that you can pull out quickly and go around them. Be especially aware of this at stop signs and red lights. But also keep a distance while driving because someone could suddenly put on their breaks and box you in that way too. Watch all activity going on around you with pedestrians and other vehicles. Be alert!

I've heard of whites getting attacked at stop lights in broad day so I would use better judgement.
