Not too many white people live in the Hill district if any. Been here in the South Hills for 29 years. Lived all over town. Live in Oakland or the South-side if you want to be close to the hill. Polish Hill isn't bad either. There are some areas within town that are okay... Don't live on the hill unless you come with a tank and grenades. Screw walking to town. The bus system is awesome here. Live near the Universities and commute. It's way better.

How often do vehicles get jacked up there?

I have no statistics but enough for the Pittsburgh Police to have a page dedicated to it on their website:

http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/bat...tml#carjacking

Granted, it's not as bad as LA and we don't hear about it often on the news.

But there have been news stories with women whose cars have been carjacked while their infants were in the backseat, etc.

Just keep in mind that carjackings can happen outside of the Hill District.

The ones I have heard about have been in Homewood.

Well then, I guess I lucked out when I turned LEFT off of Penn Ave (into Regent Square) rather than RIGHT (towards Homewood) when I overshot the Frick Mansion last year and had to double back.

I always drive through Homewood as a short cut when going from/to Squirrel Hill and Fox Chapel; however, I only do it during the daylight.

Since you read that link, you'll know how to keep yourself from being a target if you accidently end up in the wrong part of town.

It's really easy to tell when you're in the wrong place. Half the houses are boarded up, and there are weeds large enough to be small trees growing in the sidewalks.

Actually, now that I think about it, I believe it was Point Breeze, not Regent Square. Sorry.

I know it's off the subject of the Hill District, but Hopes, how slow is the trip from the Highland Park Bridge to Squirrel Hill/Oakland at rush hour? Thanks.

Highland Park Bridge to Squirrel Hill is about 10 to 15 minutes during rush hour.

Highland Park Bridge to the center of Oakland would be about 15 to 20.

I can get from Fox Chapel to Oakland in 30 minutes during rush hour.

Just make sure you're going north on 28 to get to the Highland Park Bridge, otherwise, you'll be stuck in south bound rush hour traffic to Pittsburgh if you try to hit the bridge going south on 28. Or you could get on the bridge from one of the side roads easier too.

I don't know if anyone remembers the old TV show Hill Street Blues.. That show was based on pittsburgh's hill district.

I have also heard that they have torn down most of the projects and its in the process of revitalization. This will take many many years though.

Yeah, Hill Street Blues was based on the Hill District. The writers, producers, and a few actors of that show attended CMU. That's how they got the inspiration.

Default Soho/The Bluff

You must be a natural pioneer to be interested in living in the Hill. I love that! The Hill is very steep at points. Walking to work will be a treck even without the crime. The areas known as SoHo (why? I don't know), I believe it is the Fifth/Forbes corridors, or the Bluff, between Fifth and Boulevard of the Aliies. The Bluff is probably the safer but it is being swallowed up by Mercy Hospital and Duquesne University. I truly believe these will all be great investments. properties are relatively cheap but are getting some serious attention. Probably the most overlooked neighborhood in the city. For me , this always means a hot property
