hill district is a great place
i work in the Hill, and I think it's fabulous. it's culturally one of the best places to be in Pittsburgh. August Wilson (famous playwright) grew up there, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong used to perform there. It's not absolutely safe, but no place is.
It's a good place to live if you abide by the following:
-don't walk alone at night
-make connections with your neighbors
-get involved in the community (everyone knows everyone there)
-be polite
-find out the places NOT to be (Center & Kirkpatrick, etc)
Hope this helps.

A little easy!
The Hill District is where I grew up at........so to say you don't want to be the only 'white' guy in a 'all black' ghetto is very insulting!
Not only 'white' people are reading this forum.........so we need to be careful with our words!
By the way........Crawford Square is located in the Hill District......middle class 'newer' houses where 'YES' Doctor's, Lawyers, and even Steeler players reside........Crawford Square........again it is in the Hill District across from the the Mellon Arena.........not only GHETTO BLACK FOLK (very insulting)
Mrs. White (but I'm black)

I went back
I went back and read the threads about the Hill District......needless to say......my heart is fluttering and I am so disgusted! This is only one reason my family and I re-locating to Charlotte North Carolina........Pittsburgh 'folk' is so one-sided and what seems to be prejudice .......yes I'm being judgemental like all of you just were! It's disgraceful to read these comments about the Hill Distrint since I grew up here. I often watch the news and have never EVER heard of someone getting jacked up there.......this is NOT South Central LA! Yes....you have your share of drug addicts.....maybe black folk need to hide it a little better like the white folk do.......please do not act like your world is so perfect it's not realistic not in Mt. Lebanon....no anywhere!

Sorry to hit a nerve. But the Hill District still sucks, even if Mount Lebanon is not perfect (which is a non-sequitur anyway). And I'm not afraid to be called judgmental for saying so. It takes a lot more than that to cow me into keeping my opinions to myself.

And no, Crawford Square is not in the Hill District. The Hill District starts at Develliers Street. Crawford Square is several blocks west of there.

Please
Crawford Square IS part of the Hill District! Not sure where you getting the info from.....or maybe I am wrong......maybe they changed the location of where the Hill District starts so they could lure the other kind in......so the 'other kind' won't have to state they from 'The Hill'
I'm originally from the Hill and ALL MY LIFE Crawford Square has been a part........but I'm guessing they took that away from us.......
But don't have time to argue.......guess I'm stating points as you are

I got my information from the website of the City of Pittsburgh, which I consider a fairly authoritative source on the subject. The city's webpage includes maps showing the borders of the various neighborhoods. And maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt they redrew that border just to take Crawford Square away from the Hill District.
Sorry that you're seeing your old neighborhood take a beating here and elsewhere, even though that won't stop me from sharing my candid opinion about it when people inquire. I hope things work out for you in Charlotte, though if you're like a number people we hear from, you'll be missing Pittsburgh in no time even if moving back is never a realistic option.

Naw Drover your wrong, crawford is the hill district no matter what the map says. Where the civic arena sits is where they bulldozed the lower hill, which they say, was not a good idea. Look up Pittsburgh urban renewal. Thats when the hill was destroyed and thats partly why it is what it is now.
And yes people do get jacked there. If you don't believe me call the police and ask. And yes crawford is kinda nice but last time I checked it was still on Bedford, Webster, and Center ave (main streets thru the hill).

Just what exactly does 'the other kind' mean?

There are car jackings up there. Obviously, the Hill District has changed since you moved.
