Default Looking at Crafton and Carnegie...

Hi.

I'll be exploring these areas over the next week via PAT bus and shoeleather express, looking for a rental for the next year.

Can anyone give me a quick review of these two areas? Not worried so much about connectivity to the rest of Pittsburgh. More interested in community life.

Is either a "main street" community, with a walkable business district? Are things like bars, restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, and exercise places within hoofing distance of most housing? I prefer to leave the car at home when I can, and find my social life locally.

Are there any green areas -- parks or what have you? -- where our dog would be happy?

I've lived in Pittsburgh before, and I'm very familiar with most communities in the East and South, but not so much in the West. I'd be especially appreciative if anyone with experience in all those areas could compare Crafton and Carnegie to similar areas in the E and S regions of the 'Burgh.

Crafton and Carnegie are both pretty nice areas with good pricing on apartments. They are all decent places to walk and are close to a lot of areas. As far as parks are concerned, many of the ones I have been to I believe don't allow dogs, but I can't remember all of them. I ride my bike alot in these areas, and feel safe all the time. They both are pretty community oriented, Crafton being the type of place where everyone knows each other.

Some good places to check out in those areas:

Alexion's: In between Crafton and Carnegie off of Rt. 50. Excellent sandwiches and drink prices. I would strongly suggest the Buffalo Chicken sandiwch.

The Hop House: On Rt. 50 across from Bishop Canevin High school. Pretty good drink prices and awesome food across the board. I would recommend any one of their pizzas. They are cooked in a brick oven.

I'm sorry I can't compare to Southern and Eastern parts of PA as I have lived here all of my life. I'll try and add more to this as I can think of it.

Crafton doesn't provide much in the way of Main Street Life, but Carnegie has been more along those lines. The Schools are shared as both are part of the Carlynton District.
