I know there are some great restaurants in the city and south side area but we are looking for some great places closer to home. We like to experiment but would like some direction. We are still new to the area so any place in the North Hills area would be fine. Any type of cuisine is fine as well.

About the only two non-chain restaurants are Rico's in Ross and Stone Mansion in Wexford. Both are pretty good, IMHO.

Taj Mahal on McKnight Road
Passport Cafe on Rt. 19 in northern Wexford (I think the plaza is called Pine Tree Shoppes? The one with the Panera.)
new Italian restaurant at the Eat'n'Park plaza at the corner of Brandt School Road and 910--I'm blanking on the name right now.
For a lunch/sandwich/bread place, I like Loafers--there's one in Seven Fields, one in Wexford, and one in Fox Chapel.
If you want a French bakery, Jean-Marc Chatellier's in Millvale is really good.
