This isn't the kind of stuff most UE-ers in Pittsburgh like being broadcast.
Sign up for their forums.
If you want to meet up to go anywhere, they're always down for it (most of the time). Message me back

There's also quite a few Urban Explorers on flikr.com. Join some of the Pittsburgh groups on that sight and you're sure to get some responses, they go on quite a few photo walks of abandoned urban areas.

Urban exploration is the hobby I've spent the most time on over the years. Pittsburgh has more than its fair share of abandoned buildings. Not much in the way of tunnels/underground, all I'm aware of is coal mines which are unexplorable. There are a few limestone mines 1/2 to 1 hour to the south, but in general with limestone mines once you've seen one of them you've seen em all. Pittsburgh has a great local UE group, see above. They generally focus on larger abandonments away from the core city, but there are also a ton of smaller historic abandonments in the city proper that I don't think are visited much if at all.Dixmont was awesome...too bad it no longer exists. I recall hearing they were tearing it down to build a - you guessed it - Wal-Mart.

True. That didn't turn out too well.
Landslide near Wal-Mart site shuts road again - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Sounds fun. I've done this without knowing it had a name.
A good number of years ago, when they were demo-ing the old rendering plant on Herr's Island (now called Washington's Landing), a friend and I spent the afternoon exploring the building. It still stunk, inside.
As far as the caves/tunnels aspect...
My Dad was with the City of Pittsburgh Water Department, and as a kid, I got to see the insides of the old "slow sand" filtration plant. It was acres and acres of underground filter galleries, with high, vaulted ceilings. An access tunnel ran along between adjacent galleries, and there were huge watertight doors that slid into place when the filters were in operation. When they sent a labor gang into a gallery to work, they did a headcount going in and coming out, cause if you got left inside there, the consequences would be fatal.
You all know where this place is. Saint Margaret's Hospital and the Water Works Mall stand there now.

Oh man.....there's a lot of good, isolated spots to do this in SWPA near the WV border in the old coal patch towns. Brownsville PA is literally a ghost town with tons of old abandoned hotels, railway tunnels, churches, hospitals and factories, etc. It's completely deserted and 100% safe to do without being caught..they don't have local police to patrol around for these things. I've been there, I've done it, I love it .
