OP: It all depends on what your risk tolerance is. IMHO I feel pretty safe driving in all areas of the city, but I wouldn't want to be walking around late at night in the following areas: Homewood, Wilkinsburg, Arlington Heights, East Liberty, the Hill District, or North Side. Keep in mind that the crime that occurs in these areas, though plentiful, isn't really random. Much of it can be attributed to gang / drug rivalries.

I would add Braddock and Rankin to that list. It seems like sometimes there can be a block or two embedded in otherwise safe neighborhoods which are dangerous (ex. Penn Hills), but its not like New Orleans. Also, not all of the North Side is real bad. Some areas are OK, like Observatory Hill.

In addition to those mentioned, if you get outside the city, river towns can be weird and occaisionally have higher crime. Doesn't compare to the city though.

One more thing about Pittsburgh area neighborhoods: Just because it's run down doesn't mean there is crime. People forget that often.

that's what i figured... you know...most of the time...if your not involved in gangs and or drugs...then you should be fine... i mean it's like that here in Fresno,ca i just avoid the drama and don't get involved with any of the gang members.. thanks for the advice... i definitely feel a lot better... =)

I agree with the above posters, but I think it needs to be noted that bystanders are getting caught in these gang shootings as well. Just last year, a woman was shot as she was getting off the bus to go home by a relative who is a gang member. He says he was aiming for another gang member and the woman was caught in the crossfire. A few children have died in their yards and in their homes by gang shootings. Several years ago, a little toddler boy was killed sitting in his car seat while his parents stopped for gas. The gang situation has escalated in the past year and though community groups and police are trying to address the problem, there seems to be gang members dying almost daily.

It is important to note, though, that the gang activity seems to be limited to the some of the areas listed already. It is almost unheard of for a shooting to occur elsewhere in Pittsburgh.

Race St. in Homewood is pretty much ground-zero of Pittsburgh's violent crime. So definitely don't go there. A guy I work with in Point Breeze got mugged in Homewood the other day, at 9 in the morning. Apparently the mugger tracked him as soon as he got off the bus and followed him into an alley. Yikes!

Homestead, dude.

Here's the problem with Homestead. It's not really that bad. As it approaches Munhall, it's pretty cool, just a little annoying.

But everyone goes to the waterfront, and people from not around the area might not know that right after the bridge, for those first 7 or 8 blocks it's bad. I grew up there, was mugged there, and nearly every night driving up that road you see sirens.

It's not as bad as Homewood or anything, and theres no gangs there (to my knowledge, no real ones), but I'd say it's pretty even with Braddock. Both steel towns that diminished into ghettos.

It's plenty safe in the daytime, though.

Homestead and Braddock are fairly close, I don't know how far the OP's talking about here, that's why I said it.

Does anyone know of an internet based Crime Mapping for the greater Pitsburgh area? It would be good to see the types of crimes in areas around the city. Violent crime is a serious risk to stop for gas/coffee.
