Default Wilmerding - anyone know it?

I know its small and East and its economy is worse somewhat than Pittsburgh as a whole. There's a nice old church there for sale on Caldwell but I'm in Texas for the near future.

Maybe someone knows about this place or even the building. Maybe it would make a nice residence. Costly to heat though.

Wilmerding was a company town built by George Westinghouse in the late 19th and early 20th centirues for workers at his Westinghouse Air Brake factory. It was a planned community with its own shopping district, high school, parks, trolley service, train station, and just about everything else one would need. As Westinghouse expanded, so did the "Electric Valley" throughout the 20th century. The centerpiece of the town was the "Castle" which was the headquarters of Westinghouse Air Brake. The castle still stands overlooking the town park.

It's still a nice little area, full of different styles of houses. One tragedy is that much of the shopping district was leveled during 1960s urban renewal and has been replaced with nondescript buildings. There are some books about the town that you could find on Amazon, or do an Internet search.

Thanks T-Mom, that brought back some memories. Back in the 60's you could get a burger and milkshake for 25 cents. I believe the rumour back then was "kangaroo meat". We were always at the one in Monroeville, there's a bank there now.

If I saw the right church it looks real good and could become the only mansion in Wilmerding. I didn't notice if there was garages or space for any. The newer apartment buildings around there could be Section 8. East Allegheny School System is rated 5 out of a possible 10. It's Allegheny County so do you know what your taxes might be? Possibly over $4,000 a year. Utilities are cheaper when you get away from Duquesne Light and Equitable Gas. I don't know what Wilmerding has. Maybe convert to electric heat?

That seems like a lot of money to invest in Wilmerding. For the same you could get a good place in a more desirable area and school system and not have to spend converting it, although you wouldn't have the character that church has, and the stained glass windows. Wilmerding people are alright. It's just a poor old mill town.

If you do a search there are other threads about it.
