Be sure to take the incline up to Mt. Washington and spend a few minutes admiring the great skyline view!

If you like to party, stay at the Holiday Inn Express at 10th Street on the South Side. That is where all of the bars are. It is a cool neighborhood with plenty of shops and eateries too. You can also stay at the Sheraton Station Square. There are some shops and restaurants and clubs down there. That is where you wil get the incline. I do not recommend staying Downtown if you are a twenty something on a leisure trip. Our Downtown is geared towards the business crowd, conventioneers, and people coming in for a sporting event or other event Downtown. People in their 20s usually end up taking a taxi to South Side or walking over to Station Square. I do not know your age or what your interests are. I would just suggest that if you are a college student or twenty something, stay at the South Side Holiday Inn.

Southside isn't a bad suggestion. There is a courtyard marriot in shadyside which is also a nice area with a lot of restraraunts, bars, and shopping in close promixity. it is also a really pretty neighborhood. Downtown is fine and has some nice hotels, but there isn't as much to do right there... you'd have to drive or taxi to get to anything. The Omni William Penn is really a wonderful hotel, if you want to treat yourself stay there. The hotels near the stadiums would be good as well (also have to drive to most things) provided there isn't a home game.
if you have a car, i'd just priceline it and do a 3-4 star in the downtown and university center regions. whatever you get should be fine.

Wikitravel
If you're looking for a quick guide for some suggestions on things to do and things to be aware of, check out Wikitravel's guide on Pittsburgh. Its a quick reference to get you started, and will fill you in on a lot of Pittsburgh's quirks as a first-time traveler.
My favorite thing to recommend is to check out this map of Pittsburgh's vistas and find an off-the-beaten-path spot to take in the view. My personal favorite is the St. John's Lutheran Cemetary.
Good luck and have fun here in the 'burgh!

Why is this your favorite? Just curious. I've never been there, don't even know where it is.

I like it because it has an amazing view of the city, but from an angle that you're not used to seeing. Not to mention it's much quieter than being on Grandview Ave or at the West End Overlook, and you can look out almost 360 degrees. Not-to-mention it is all grass, so you can just have a seat out on the grass and take in the view.
The view from the cemetary as seen from Matt Robinson's Website: PittsburghSkyline.com

You are correct. That is not a view that people see very often like from the North Shore, Mt. Washington or any of the bridges or highways leading into the city. It is a high and Panoramic view that even includes a good shot of Mellon Arena.
