Question Ideal neighborhood in Pittsburgh close to Oakland

My boyfriend is coming to join me in Pittsburgh in a few months and we thought it'd be great to start early looking for an apartment. Little did we know how much criteria we needed to fill to have both of us happy.

He doesn't want a tiny apartment. He's a filmmaker with lots of equipment and also plays the drums, so he needs extra storage. He's ideally looking for something like a townhouse/duplex, because it'll be roomier. He wants to live in a quaint residential neighborhood, and he's been liking the suburbs of Pittsburgh a lot.

We will be sharing a car, so someplace where we won't have to pay ridiculous fees for a parking spot would be nice. I go to school at Pitt and work at UPMC, so I really need something that is on the bus route that goes to Oakland, as a back up for transportation. Safety is also one of my bigger concerns. We want to be able to go for a walk, but not be concerned about being mugged or assaulted.

The biggest issue most of all is that we don't want to spend lots of money (preferably no more than 750/month). I thought Squirrel Hill was absolutely perfect, but it doesn't seem like it would be affordable for us.

Too idealistic?

I myself don't know much about Pittsburgh yet either, I just moved here a couple of months ago. We're just looking for neighborhoods right now, so any input would be helpful!

I lived in a decently sized house in Greenfield on the Squirrel Hill/Greenfield border for $800 a month.

Highland Park has sizable apartments in big old houses and is a five to ten minute bus ride to Oakland.

Greenfield and Regent Square are reasonable ideas. The last time I said Highland Park isn't safe I got chastised by everyone., then there was a murder there.

It really depends which part of Highland Park; some are def. nicer than others but there are nice areas with a decent amount of younger people and it's more of a liberal nieghborhood if you are on the left.

Highland park can be great if you're in a good section. If you look at apartments there, walk around the neighborhood and the area a bit and see what you think, ask some people nearby or in the building about the area. The closer you are to the park, the better, but then it is slightly further to Pitt. a 5-10 minute bus ride may be a bit optimistic. I think the fastest I've ever gotten from Highland Park to Pitt was 15 minutes, and that was at 10:30pm. A rush hour bus ride to oakland can easily take 35 minutes.
