This type of weather pattern with a Trough over the eastern us encourages cold air over Pittsburgh. The light spotty snow we have recieved has been strictly lake effect snow. The pacific storm season has yet to really get going so the nation has been void of major storms moving west to east.
I just looked at several of the computer long range models and they are showing a warm up after December and lasting through Jan and well into Feb.
If this pans out to be true that would mean a mild and fairly dry winter after a chilly late fall and early winter. Fingers crossed for a white holiday as it maybe another case of little snow chances for Pittsburgh with yet another 'mundane winter' At least heating cost's maybe kept in check. Time will tell.

Wow, I thought I heard earlier in the fall we were supposed to have a cold and exceptionally snowy winter this year. Cool beans, I hope the computer models are right.

Heya Dugdogmaster. I think the Farmer's Almanac is calling for a cold and snowy winter, and the mid fall computer models did show the onset of a below average temperature winter, which I think is fair to say is happening. I think the local forecaster's jumped on the notion that with almost no effect from El Ninio or La Nina ( warmer but moist pacific moisture into the US ) Our local winter would tend to be cold and offer some snow.
But the recent models indicate the mild's coming back into play for Jan and Feb. What do ya bet a cold, wet spring...

Anybody living in the city limits think that the salt trucks were slow in getting out yesterday? I live in Beechview on a really steep hill, and conditions were really dangerous yesterday. People were sliding down the hill sideways or couldn't make it up and were just leaving cars by the side of the road and walking or getting people with AWD to pick them up. The salt trucks didn't get out until much after dark. I was in for the evening, but I couldn't have driven even if I'd wanted to.

I'm debating contacting my city councilman about it--I know everyone thinks their street should be top priority, and the city's trying to save money at every turn, but still.

Allready the jet stream is changing from our early winter type pattern to a more mild set-up. Next week the burgh might be flirting with 50 degrees!

Some of the 15 day forecasts are showing temps in the upper 50's on Christmas Eve. Boooooooooo! But of course, 15-day forecasts are about as accurate as drawing random numbers out of a hat and saying that is the temperature for that day. I hope the consistent warm air doesn't arrive until after New Years.

It was inevitible that a warm-up was coming since it was such an unusually cold and snowy November. The weather pattern usually switches after a few weeks, so the west will get cold while the east warms up.

I find it very frustrating in that more times than not a storm system will bring major warming ahead and during the bulk of precip. We get 'teased' with the last bit changing back to snow. Oh well, migrate further north or to higher ground for more snow.

Come up to Edinboro! We've been getting like a foot every week!

Talk about a mixed bag... Looking out the window at work right now just west of Crafton, I see rain, sleet, snow and fog....all at the same time.

At least an inch of snow and snow covered roads here in the Robinson (west suburbs) areas.
