Default More Good News For East Liberty

Planning commission OKs East Liberty Target store

There is a silly quote from the owner of a nearby hot dog shop about the development "blocking" his business. Ah, the more people who come to the neighborhood, the better it will be for business.

Also, the Target will replace a twenty story VACANT highrise building. Not only will this new Target--that will supposedly "block" his business- be smaller than the highrise, there were no tenants in the highrise that could possibly support his nearby business. I hate to say it, but some Pittsburghers are resistant to change. He sounds like one of them. Get used to it. As Bob Dylan sang "the times they are a changin.'"

East Liberty has tried to revive itself many times in the past and failed at every effort. Now without any fanfare things are looking real good.

"He was skeptical of claims that Target would increase traffic around his shop."

^ This guy is obstinate and stupid. A smart businessman would love to be in his situation.

Are they going to get rid of Penn Circle? It seems all that did was change from driving block to block in a straight line, you drove in curves stopping for all the lights and were too far away to see most of the stores.

This is great news for the neighborhood. It looks like design-wise, it's going to be much nicer than the standard strip mall Targets. The East Liberty area is turning into a nice shopping district for the entire East End of Pittsburgh, with practical stores for all income levels. It makes sense, since most roads and bus routes in the area lead right to East Liberty.

I believe that the city has plans to re-do the traffic circulation around Penn Circle to two-way traffic at some point. I read that they are also looking to reconfigure the giant bus loop at Penn Circle South and Penn Avenue to make it more pedestrian-friendly.

This Target is going to be a first of its kind big box store in the nation as well, with plenty of WINDOWS! I love how East Liberty is quietly becoming a better neighborhood.

As far as Penn Circle is concerned, I'm not positive, but I believe I've heard that the road will be redone in some type of fashion.

It is going to be the first Target and prob first big box store in the nation to have windows in the shopping part. This is very exciting for East Liberty because now anyone in the East End and that area can really afford and have reason to shop there. Also, I think it will lead to more great things to bring it back to the glory days.

The neighborhood is jumping at night, too. The Shadow Lounge on Baum near Highland has live music and is a gathering spot for younger people. Kelly's Bar has retro decor and good martinis, Abay has great Ethiopian food, there's a new high-end Chinese Restaurant at Centre and Highland, Red Room just expanded for quiet drinks and dinner, and there a few other new places to go that I can't name. And right at the corner of Baum and Highland is the Waffle Shop: A Reality Show, which is a two-semester CMU project where you can get waffles, be videotaped by students, and have your 15 minutes of fame in the storefront windows of the restaurant. Very cool.

I love Target, so this is good news for me, too.

Although I probably won't be living here by the time it's open, I'll still know about it in my mind.
And in my heart.

Does anyone know if the Roman Room(it's a gothic club) is still operating? I believe it was on Liberty Ave. near East Liberty

We frequent Borders and went there last night, and also noticed a neat little eatery open on the second floor of the building that has Fedex and has the T Mobile and chocolate store on top, can't wait to try that.

My wifes office is just up the street from where the new Target will be built, we drove by it last night. It's right in line with the Bakery Square project. I'm happy to see all of these businesses, but have to say, East Liberty really needs to clean up the area around Penn Ave and Highland, and Highland near the Home Depot; there's always trash blowing around there, it looks deplorable.
