Default Pittsburgh $700,000 - $1,000,000

Pittsburgh is one of my favorite cities. That's why I want to live there. But I also want to know what neighborhoods are best to look into when searching for a home in the price range of $700,000 to $1,000,000 in the city. Also, are there any nice clubs here. I want to be close to upscale shopping and near a premier private school. Does the actual city have very many detached homes? Apparently Shadyside is a good neighborhood? Is Grandview Avenue nice?

Shadyside was going to be my choice for you for homes in that price range, at least two private schools, clubs, eateries, etc. I'm not quite sure where Grandview Avenue is .

My other choices for you would be Squirrel Hill and Point Breeze, with their own share of homes in that price range.

I would tell you definitely to look at Shadyside. Walnut Street (between S. Aiken and S. Negley) is probably the type of upscale shopping you're looking for, and there are tons of great homes in your price range, and probably actually lower. You can get great old Victorian homes with all the bells and whistles right in Shadyside for the 400-600 k range. The Winchester Thurston School, a coed prep school, is located at Morewood and Bayard, and the Ellis School, a private all-girls school, is located on 5th Ave., about 2 blocks past Shady.

The homes on Grandview are really interesting - there's a mix of big older homes and new ultra modern looking homes and condos. The have, of course, a spectacular view of the city (hence the name), but other than the view, and the few fancy restaurants on Grandview, there's probably not too much that would appeal to you.

Shadyside bordered by Fifth Avenue, Ellsworth, Aiken and Morewood avenues has great homes in your range. Very leafy area.

Another not-well known but fantastic area is the Murdoch Farms area of Squirrel Hill. Secluded but still near the action. Substantial homes developed sometime in the 20s. Large shade trees over the streets because the developer put all the utlities underground, a rarity for this area.

Summerset at Frick Park. They have a website.

Edit: It's a fairly new development within city limits in the East End. It's right off the parkway, right next to Frick Park, it's not far from Squirrel Hill and The Waterfront for shopping.

Pittsburgh is a much smaller city than you think. There are only a handful of premier private schools. Ellis, Winchester, Shadyside (only the lower school is in the city) and Sewickley Academy (not in the city). With regard to clubs, if you want a country club you have to go to the suburbs. The city has the Pittsburgh Golf Club (no golf course) and the PAA. There is really only one upscale shopping area in the city, Shadyside. With this in mind, things are pretty close so you can live in the suburbs and be in the "city" in less than 20 minutes. If you are spending 700 - 1,000,000, you can live wherever you want in Pittsburgh. Mt. Washington probably is a place where an upscale family lives do to the fact that most of the expensive places are condos. Good luck.

Possibly buy a place in Mt. Washington, definitely with the view, as an investment and get a place in Shadyside to live in. You might have enough money left to get a place in the suburbs too. Oakmont is great and affordable and has famous Oakmont CC plus a public course.

Shadyside sounds like a great fit but I'd second the recommendation to look into Murdoch Farms as well--it's a really nice, quiet, conveniently located neighborhood and there will be plenty of houses there in your range.
