A shop like this would probably do well in Shadyside, Mt. Lebo, or Sewickley. It won't survive at a mall, as even stores like Macy's carry many high end names, and at Ross Park, almost every high end brand is already there (or at Saks Downtown for that matter). If you know people who still live here, and they know people etc.. I think you'd do fine. Just don't expect people to be waiting outside.

If im not mistaken, quite a few advertisements suggest that Pittsburgh is indeed a player in the fashion scene. American Eagle is based in Pittsburgh, correct?

I agree Awesomo. The funny thing is, Pittsburgh was built on money. People see and say whatever the heck they want if they have a particular axe to grind. I am open to any criticism of Pittsburgh. However, the criticism best be thought out objectively or the poister will be ripped to shreds and made to look foolish. They have no credibility when they shoot from the hip and expect to people to take any and every criticism of Pittsburgh as the bonafide truth. See floridaorbust.

I am not joking, there really are poor people who shop at walmart and where poor clothes, and eat Pizza too in Florida!
I really have never seen anybody wear the clothes you just described anywhere in the city. If you only know Pittsburgh on the walmarts that are within a 50 mile radius of it, than I please ask you to not describe my town on internet message boards. This is not a fair assessment of my town.
This thread has dissolved into describing the poor class and calling it Pittsburgh. Like I said before so many times. The amount of ignorant post on this forum is just sickening. There is also highclass people in Pittsburgh also. I know it may be shocking to some of you that only know this city by shoping at the Walmart in Delmont. But there is more to Pittsburgh than Walmart 30 miles from the city.

I lived in Western PA for 31 years. Yes, I do know people shop at walmart. Guess what, we do to Not bashing the poor or the hard working. And I have shopped in Delmont. Use to live in Indiana County. and PGH.
And yes they even dress poorly in Florida. Never said they didn't. But you cannot dismiss the dress code that seems to be in Western PA. I can't believe you have never seen the clothing that I described being worn in your town.

Chicago will never get over it's "Second City" complex, even though it's technically third in population.... so it tends to overcompensate by touting al things "Chicago" as being so unique and special that you're just damned lucky to have found it at all!!! - - - Yes, they have a livelier arts and culture community, but with over 3 million more peple, that is to be expected.
In Minneapolis' case, the city has always prided itself on its "Hipness Quotient", because there's not many other reasons anyone would ever voluntarily elect to suffer through their winters, there!!!! - - - The dress-up culture there is based partly on the extreme cold in winter, and partially out of a deep-seated desire to attract more of the same liberal, artsy, intellectual types they are already known for... it's a bit smug, and kinda' like the "South Park" cartoon where the town suffers from "Smug", I think Minneapolis is a victim of its own smugness.
I'm not sure Minneapolis is a victim of anything. It seems to be growing.
Pittsburgh is proud of its blue-collar heritage, even as it embraces modern-day technology and heads into the 21st Century. As such, I find it refreshing that I can be "casual" almost anywhere within reason, and that "casual" doesn't have to mean dockers, a henley or polo shirt or even a button down with a tie....
But, all in all, even though there IS "high fashion" here, it's not as pervasive as in many other cities, and I thank God for that....

Yes, it is, but it's not exactly my description of "high fashion". And in my limited experience with the place, they don't treat the teens that shop there well.

American Eagle is certainly NOT high-fashion, although they certainly do get impressionable youth to pay exhorbitant prices, just to advertise the store on their t-shirts.......

I'm assuming the sweatpants have the steelers logo on them? It's more formal.

Check out 1662designzone.com for links to cool shops, boutiques featuring local artists and designers.
I'd contact shop owners to see if they'll give you the lowdown on what business is like for them in Pittsburgh. There are niche markets in most urban areas that cater to people who want high fashion. It's just that the niche may be pretty small in a place like Pittsburgh as compared to NYC, LA, etc.
I'm planning to move to Pittsburgh from the SF Bay Area in about four years. I make handmade jewelry and accessories and would love to know what the market is like there.
