I am a architectural engineer, I work on REAL projects, and get a pretty decent paycheck for my age. I will never wear a suit to a job. My meetings I go to don't require a suit. I don't go to work and ask, "Do you want fries with that?"

This is one negative thing about the East. People still of the 1950s ideology that you got to be in uncomfortable clothes to sit in an office being an architect, banker, etc. Why? What does a suit do. To most people in inflates their ego, while the job they do sucks.

The western attitude is the way to go. Luckily most AE companies in Pittsburgh have changed. However, there are still tools you run across that where suits and ties to like I said, Inflate their egos and to feel important.

I think it depends on the culture of the company you work for -- some allow it and some won't hear of it.

But most places have a sort of "uniform" even if it's not a strict uniform like McDonalds. When I worked at the bank, our office had to process the city coin from the parking meters and it was a messy smelly job. And it came in every day, and no one knew who was going to have to do it. So in our office we all tended to wear pants. (Oh the year I found the lace Keds.... I was in heaven!!! They were fancy enough to get away with at the bank!) But our other branches, it was heavily discouraged for women to wear pants. And so it wasn't done.

At the other bank I worked at, we were very strictly monitored dress wise -- no short skirts, no cleavage, very proper and very 1950's.... and when we went to bank wide meet and greet in the city, all us workers were stunned at what the other branches were allowed to get away with dress code wise.

And our branch won a dinner out and our assistant manager tried to make us dress up for dinner at a Chinese restuarant. It was a nice Chinese restaurant, but really -- dress UP? She was insisting on ties and skirts....

So I wore a tie with my jeans. Got there early and tied a few on, too.... I transferred out of the branch soon after....

Pittsburgh is, IMO, pretty traditional business attire. If you go downtown during lunch you will see a lot of suits and "nice" business casual in the workplace. For casual attire, it's pretty much "stuck in the past" with only a small, nearly underground "trendy" fashion scene.

Compare that to LA or SD where you'll see people wearing a t-shirt and jeans in situations you'd never expect.

Ties are useless pieces of fabric. I to a large degree agree with Awsomeo. They really are (I have an MBA and run my own business so don't even bother with the McD's comments). I can't think of a more pointless thing to wear. I had some nice ties before I moved from Pittsburgh and if I didn't think they were really nice I'd have considered burning them.

Fashion is idiotic. Fashion is for followers. Fashion is totally different than style. I've seen plenty of style around Pittsburgh.

This was really fun to read. There's a lot of truth in these responses even if they were intended to be sarcastic.

In all seriousness, Pittsburghers are not afraid to spend money but it better be good quality stuff. I'd spend $200 on a pair of jeans but they better fit well and last a long time.

Also, we are all big sports fans. Girls would love to have really cute black and gold stuff to wear. It doesn't have to have NFL or NHL logos on them. Put these colors in your store window and you'll get noticed.

Fashion in Pittsburgh? Is that a joke?

It never ceases to amaze me how I'll go to a nice restaurant and there will be some bum in a Steeler hat and shirt. The idiots in this town don't know how to dress or what fashion is.
