question about retiring in Peters
If we decide to retire in Peters we were wondering if this suburb is all young families. We are empty nesters in our early 50's. I really don't want to move to an area that has only young families. Can anyone share some info. Thanks

I am sure you would feel right at home, lots of people in your age group in that area. Like I answered in my other post, however, it is suburbia at it's best.

My husband and I have been living in Peters for over 6 months now, we have 2 preschoolers. Our neighborhood is an older development with a mix of ages, not too many small children. But, there are a lot of new developments with tons of kids. There are some townhouse neighborhoods in Peters, too.
I like it here because we are close to so many things, but there are still farms around. It takes us 10 minutes to get to South Hills Village, probably the best mall in the area. There are a decent amount of good restaurants within 15 minutes. And, in 20 minutes, you can drive down to Washington if you need to go to Target, Wal-Mart or Sam's Club. But--in 30 minutes (without traffic) you can be in Pittsburgh.
Peters offers a nice community life, they boast an incredible library and recreation center which both offer year-round activities. There is also a nice trail that runs thru Peters, and on any nice day you can find runners, walkers, people walking dogs, pushing strollers, etc.
As far as bugs, like in the south, roaches ("palmetto bugs") and lizards/geckos are not common. We do have spiders, earwigs, flies, others. However, I lived in PA for 28 years before a stint of living in Jacksonville, FL--where I was my first roach ever.
Please let me know if you have any other questions about Peters or Southwestern PA. Good luck.

I forgot: there are two townships next to Peters, Nottingham and North Strabane. They are in different school districts, so the housing prices are lower. In fact, there is a really nice development one road away from the Peters border (in Nottingham) that has both single level and 2-story houses. My realtor told me that a lot of empty nesters live there because the houses cost less because it is in Ringgold school district, not Peters. But, you are still very close to everything.

Thanks so much for the information. Could you also tell me honestly about how the weather is year round. Is it really as gloomy as they say. I hear it is like Seattle with many dreary overcast days. Is this really true? How bad are the winters?

I've lived in Pittsburgh for over 20 years and the winters have gotten pretty mild. I'm told by Pittsburgh natives it used to snow a lot more than it does now. It gets cold, but mostly in the 30's and 40's. Today is a very dreary day with rain and a high in the 40's. But for the most part, it is overcast most of the time in the winter rather than dreary.
Good luck with your move!

I don't know where you heard that....
but my daughter is now living in Seattle, and she says the weather is not comparable at all.

Snow not so bad as probably Buffalo, Erie, Boston, Cleveland. It IS cold all winter, but the summers are beautiful--everything is green. And, in the summer, you can go outside all of the time, it is not that oppresive heat like in the south (where you want to stay inside with the A/C on all day).
