Thanks Jay, this is exactly what I was looking for. Here on Long Island we are paying about 19 cents a KW

It looks like most houses in the Burgh come with fireplaces. How much is a cord of wood these days? Chopped and delivered.

Welcome.

I was recently looking at avg national electric rates, and could not believe what they were for New England and your neck of the woods... INSANE!

Unfortunately, my rental home is all electric, and uses a heat pump w/electric resistance for supplemental when temps go below the balance point. I can tolerate colder ambient temps, but am going to have to use more $uplimental because others family members in the home like it warmer. Straight heat pump uses 3000 watts/hr for 22 cents. Heat pump with the electric coils uses 23,000 watts/hr for $1.72!!!

My bill for last month was $208 for a 4000 sf ranch (so the land lord says), with a lot of use of timed space heaters, managing the electric water heater, and sound conservation. I live rurally and have a well and septic tank, so no water/sewage bill. Home also has two fireplaces, and I really need to get them up and going when the landlord gets them cleaned.

For the other post asking about firewood, looking in craigslist has a lot of options:
