Summer Internships
I'm beginning my search for a summer internship.
I'm currently in my second semester of my sophomore year, as an economics major. I'm able to work anywhere in the Pittsburgh metro area, but would prefer to be within a half an hour drive of Shadyside.
If anyone has any suggestions of companies that are looking for interns and/or organizations that match interns with companies, please share.
Thanks in advance!

Hello Kate!
Although not necceseraly a financial institution like Goldman Sachs, I think Ernst & Young in downtown Pittsburgh might have some interesting options for interships. They have a web-site related to graduates and undergraduates, who are planning a career within the organization. Take a look at it and let me know what you think.
Regards,
Amazonas

In Edinboro, good luck. You may be able to find a small graphics design company, but that's about it in that area. If you come back to Pittsburgh for a summer internship you can probably find something better. Disney just partnered with CMU not too long ago.

Kate, have you tried finding an internship through career services at your university? This is probably your best bet.
Ernst & Young is going to be tough to get in the door - typically the big four recruit on campus from target schools. But if you want to work at an accounting firm all four big four have offices in the city and there are a bunch of smaller firms like alpern rosenthal and schneider downs.
I'll be honest I'm not sure what econ majors do so I'm probably not much help.

Kate,
E&Y, PWC, Deloitte all have offices in Pittsburgh and all do summer interns. For a sophomore, it'll be tough to get into them (or at all), but you should definitely try. Maybe you won't land one this year, but definitely think about next year. RedBall is right, take a look at Schneider Downs and some of the other smaller firms, they do take interns too and it'll be easier to get your foot in the door with a smaller firm and you can always end up at a Big 4 for full time.
PNC, UPMC are also both great names in Pittsburgh and do all kinds of internships. Network network network is the key to landing an internship.

Yes, this. Hopefully, companies that have been vetted by career services will give you meaningful work, rather than using you as a gopher. There's probably a database of companies that solicit interns from your school. Maybe ask a counselor. If there's one company that you'd really like to intern for, approach them! I think that directness is often rewarded (in my experience).
