What is the commute into Pittsburg from Squirrel Hill?

It seems you may not be that familiar with the metro... Greensburg is pretty far out... about as far out as you can go, while Mt Washington and Squirrel Hill are literally minutes from downtown... either would be a pretty long commute.
If you are set on an urban setting, I would recommend Regent Square or Edgewood. Those communities would let you avoid the tunnel, but keep the urban feel (Regent Square is where city limits end, Edgewood is where suburbs start)...If you don't mind the suburbs, you could look at Monroeville, which is your prototypical big-box suburb. 15-20 minutes to the city 30-45 minutes to Greensburg.

thanks zip95; am still learning the city and this forum is very helpful and I am most appreciative that many are so willing to provide positive help and insight without frustration for what must seem as pretty elementary questions.
Thanks also for the heads up on Regent Square or Edgewood. Not much of a desire to go to Monroeville as we have done the "big-box" burb and I think if I get too much outside of the city then the natural default is to not go into the city very much. So our search continues. - will try to find somewhere that is w/i 20 minutes of the city and no more than 30-40 minutes from Greensburg. I liked Squirrel Hill homes and the Sommerset set-up. I will look at your recommendation. Again, these replies are invaluable and appreciated. Red44

We thought the same... but we travel into the city a lot. Especially in the fall, when Steeler football, Panther football, Pirate baseball and the Pittsburgh symphony all have various levels of overlap.
Throw in Gallery Crawls, plays, musicals... well, we are in town plenty!
Good luck in your search!
If you don't mind telling... who's hiring in Greensburg?

I commute from Apollo, in northeastern Westmoreland County to Station Square everyday using the Parkway East. It typically only takes me an hour with traffic...except this past Thursday. 40 minutes from Churchill to the Squirrel Hill Tunnel but that is rare. I think the height sensors on the tunnels malfunctioned here and there.
But it takes me an hour or less and without traffic I can make it to Downtown in about 30 - 40 minutes. I don't mind it.

You can try North Huntingdon, Hempfield, Penn Trafford, Murraysville; they will all be easier on your pocket book and put you about mid-way between Greensburg and Pittsburgh. You can travel the parkway to the turnpike to the Irwin exit or Rte. 30 out through forest hills....plus numerous other back roads to get to your destinations. It takes me b/w 25-30 min. to get downtown from Hempfield twp (we live a mile from the turnpike exit) without rush hour traffic. It takes b/w 15-20 min. to get to downtown Greensburg. I gave up city living when I got married (lived on Mt. Washington for a couple years, Cohassett St.).
