Hasn't the medical field blown up in the Pittsburgh area? Are there good schools? Recommendations? I'm kind of just snooping around for a friend.

I believe Carlow University still has a good program. A lot of the hospitals have their own nursing schools, including Ohio Valley in the west area of the city. There is no nursing shortage here, but you can still find work w/o much trouble. And because of the large elderly population, nursing home and home health care is big here.

I graduated from Carlow University with a BSN. Carlow is a great program. I always recommend it. Pitt is in the top 10 of nursing programs nationwide, I believe. Pitt expects you to jump through hoops though to be admitted and you have to have the grades to get in. I never wanted to go there because I wanted a small school. I didn't want to get lost in the #'s.

I actually got my diploma RN from Shadyside Hospital School of Nursing then later went back and got my BSN at Carlow. I don't recommend that route--just suck it up and go the 4 years to begin with.

I always thought the best nurses graduated from the Hospital schools. At least that's what my wife tells me.

They get better clinical training for sure. When I graduated from Shadyside Hospitals program, I worked with Pitt graduate nurses that didn't know how to insert a foley or an NGT. I had been inserting both of them all through school!

BUT, it's a big PIA to go back and get your degree after you are out in the work field. I say suck it up and go the 4 years to begin with. You'll catch up with on the job training soon enough.

Duquesne has an advanced program for nursing students who already have a bachelors degree in any field. Supposedly, this allows the them to start at higher paying positions. It was added only a few years ago.

Do a google search for the programs in the area. BTW, I graduated from Pitt, and while I never (to the best of my memory, lol) inserted an NG tube in school, I did plenty of Foley cath insertions at Magee.
