Pittsburgh has a lot of conservative democrats. They may have conservative values on abortion, homosexual rights, being able to destoy the environment as they please, etc etc. However, they will have more democratic views with when it comes to labor rights, unions, taxes on the rich vs the middle class, etc.

PA has a rich tradition of Conservative Democrats. Congressman Murtha from JOhnstown/Cambria County area, former Governer Bob Casey are a couple of PA Conservative Democrats.
SInce I'm basically a Conservative Democrat myself, I obviously can't give an unbiased description of what Conservative Democrats believe. I think the gist is a belief in unions for working folks, getting the tax burden back onto the wealthy, and a taste for liberal economic ideals that show compassion for working folks. A typical conservative Democrat, I think, wants to see socialized medicine, is pro-union, and has a healthy mistrust of big businesses who underpay their workers and would rather leave the U.S. so that they can pay slave labor to poor people in the third world, instead of paying a decent wage to an American worker on which he or she can live with some dignity.
Where a Conservative Democrat parts ways with your pure liberal is on some of the social issues. Obviously, there are many different ideas out there on these issues among conservative Democrats. Some Conservative Democrats are churchgoing folks who are with the Republicans on abortion and gay rights, but see that Republican economic ideals are unchristian. "Love the person, hate the act", as a bible-based philosophy toward homosexuals, is an important belief that is lacking in modern liberalism. This belief entails fair employment opportunities for gays and not abusing them for their misguided lifestyle, but, at the same time, making it clear to them that God has a better plan for their life that does not involve being homosexual. They are not given special rights as gays, as this would reinforce behaviors that are not in their best interests.

Pittsburgh racist ??? NO WAY !!.....If you're black, spend a few months in the deep south with some good ol' boys, then you'll see what being racist is all about...If you're white, spend your time in the Detroit inner city hangin' with a gang ( pick one )....Either place, you'll be lookin' over your shoulder everywhere you go & gettin' home before dark.....Compared to those places, Pittsburgh's heaven....

The racism in Pittsburgh is suttle the way that it works here is through inadequate education, unfair housing practices, unequal hiring processes and nonexistant political empowerment. Actually I think that I rather deal with the good old boys down south, at least I would know who my enemies are.

simetime, i completely agree. at least with overt racism you know where you stand. the subtle, covert, systemic, institutionalized racism inherent in education, hiring practices, housing, and wages is in many respects more damaging and violent then a group of idiot thugs kicking the crap out of someone because they're the wrong colour. just because people aren't being beaten for their race doesn't mean paying them less for the same job is somehow acceptable (you'd think the union enthusiasts would have a problem with unequal pay for the same job).

I think that I have found out why so many religious types hate homosexuals. Many of them find it hard to believe that some people are just born that way (liking the same sex) and thus cannot alter who they are. In believing this theory they open themselves up to realizing that GOD may have made a mistake, which by proper docterine is impossible! Now in my travels I have met natural gays (born into homosexuality and therefore cannot change who/what they are) and those who choose that type of lifestyle for whatever reason (rape/abuse ect) these people may/may not go back to being heterosexuals. What these religous types overlook is that regardless of their sexual orientation .......they are stil GODs children and should be treated as such.
I remember reading some time ago that black people did not have souls and could not get into heaven. Over the years that train of thought began to disappear and hopefully the gay thing will also

wow, the homo thing. It's easy to hate those guys, in my early 20's I was approached at a singles(straight) bar and once in the NY YMCA. Seriously, I don't throw off those vibes. The first house I purchased was next to a gay guy that was also a male hooker. There were so many men in and out of there, unbelievable.
But then I discover my niece is gay, guess what, things change.
