I doubt shedding light on mob corruption is really "supporting" Youngstown. I just share what i know and i thought some people here might be interested in the role the Pittsburgh mob played in Youngstown.

As the old adage states "what Mafia? it does not exist" If it does in Pgh they keep it under wraps. The real mobsters here in the "burgh" are the politicans who get kickbacks from creating dumb projects such as the tunnel to nowhere that is over budget.

Cheap shot. The poster linked some very interesting and informative articles. As opposed to many uncorroborated facts and dubious opinions in this thread.

I didn't read any of the linked articles so some of this info might be a repeat but the Godfather of Pittsburgh was Michael Genovese (not related to famed New York Godfather Vito Genovese who did have a brother Michael) who was pretty much in power from approx 1985-2007. He kept a very low profile but he was on hand at the Apalachin summit in New York in 1957 which proved there was mafia in the country. Genovese's hangout, where he used to do business, was usually the Holiday house in Monroeville which has since been torn down, and L.A. motors in Verona. The Pittsburgh family was actually pretty powerful (and definitely had way more that 6 people) in the late 80's/early 90's because most other mafia cities were under indictment--this is when its believed that Pittsburgh took control of the Youngstown/Wheeling profits. In the mid 90's though the government hit Pittsburgh hard and had Charles Porter flipped (along with some others but I cannot think of them off hand). Pittsburgh had one of the original 26 mafia cities and was very well connected with New York in the late 1930's/1940's but as one poster already mentioned there was a sort of falling out. Mafia here had a stronghold in New Ken. McKeesport, Braddock, Monroeville and probably other parts but those were the most prominent. Within the past ten years they have been involved in illegal video poker games, bookmaking obviously, I would be very very surprised if they are not involved in construction rackets here (if you ever met the people who do many of the jobs downtown you would know why), and probably other things even though they may compete with the Pagans for some extortion or drugs. They were definitely involved with the unions when LaRocca was the Don (there is a story on this somewhere), and now they are not to big so I'm not sure what they are totally involved in but the rumors around Pittsburgh is that they are still in Monroeville, New Ken., and Cannonsburg. Oh, and I have not heard anything about Irish mob in Pittsburgh. I don't think the city is big enough for Irish, Italians, and Pagans(mostly stay out towards South/East of Pittsburgh)

Interesting post....tell me more about how Pittsburgh took over the Youngstown and Wheeling Profits.... I'm more interested in the Wheeling profits.
Any info on the people who ran the Wheeling area?
