I'm looking on craigslist and see that almost all 1 BR apartments near the universities have hardwood floors and radiators. I personally hate hardwood floors 'cause they're loud and creaky.

Is it unreasonable to expect to find a 1 BR apartment with wall to wall carpeting and central heating for under $700?

If memory serves a lot of the housing around Pitt is OLD. Old means hardwood floors. And with so many more people loving hardwood floors right now, you may be out of luck. But with Ikea, you can buy some really inexpensive carpets to toss around -- or even have remnant floor to floor carpets bound at the sides to practically cover your floors to mimic wall to wall. And NOT spend tons of money.

First the weather, now this with the floors and the heat? My man, I think you're going to have a tough time in the Burgh.

Some times life is tough - we do what we can. But your post is not really helpful.

Good point about the carpet. So central heat is out of the question too?

Yep. But radiators usually work pretty well.

Chicknpotpie, don't you realize by now that in Pittsburgh you'll never see the sun, you'll get stared at for being Asian, you'll get lung cancer if you live east of the city, and there are no apartments built after 1920 and they all have noisy hardwood floors and no central heat?

I think you'll find hot water heat to be more efficient than forced air, wish I had it at my house. As to the hardwood floors, just go to any carpet warehouse and buy some remnants.

Radiant heat is sooo much better, especially if you have allergies. Sucks if you don't have air conditioning though.......

Radiators and central heating are not mutually exclusive; in fact, most radiators are part of central heating systems (a coordinated system of heating multiple rooms -- by various means, but usually by furnace or boiler.) Do you mean forced air systems?

Likewise, hardwood floors are not necessarily creaky.

Radiators as part of central heating systems and hardwood floors are fairly standard fare in pre-WWII buildings -- in Pittsburgh and in much of the U.S.
