Info About The Waterfront in Homestead and The Cork Factory In The Strip
Hi, I am new on here.
I'm dating a guy who lives in Pittsburgh, before, I make the official move to PGH, I have decided that I like to rent a place to see what it's like. My plan is to spend the entire Summer in PA.
I have checked out a few Corporate lets and I have come down with 2 places where I am interested in but, don't have personal info on.
The Waterfront in Homestead and the Cork Factory in the Strip.
My boyfriend tells me I will like the Waterfront more then the Cork since it's on the water and has loads of shopping.
Any info on these two buildings would be appreciated.

It's astonishing how many people get shot and/or killed at The Waterfront, which abuts some really not-nice areas. There were two homicides at the Waterfront in 2008 alone, and two more just one block away.

Yeah, the Waterfront is in Homestead, which isn't the best area. But I've walked around 8th Avenue in Homestead alone (in the daytime) and felt just fine.
And also, I'm just guessing, because I don't know for sure, but these people who were killed at the waterfront probably weren't just suburbanites at Target, they were probably from the surrounding area and involved in gangs or other crime. Not to discount the potential danger - be cautious everywhere - but if you mind your own business, don't get involved in gangs, and don't start selling drugs - I think you'd be just fine in the Waterfront and Homestead.
But personally, between the Strip District and the Waterfront, I'd probably pick the Strip. It doesn't have as much shopping as the Waterfront, but the shopping it does offer is much more unique, interesting, and local.

Well, one of them was a robbery victim at Damon's. And of course stray bullets don't care if you're in a gang or not. And maybe I'm old-fashioned or something, but everything else being equal and given a choice between where they're more likely or less likely to fly, I'll opt for "less likely" every time.

There's some restaurants and clubs and bars and stuff in the Strip too. It's not the city's premier nightlife area but it's not a snoozer zone either. There's good people-watching in the Strip.

If you are interested in moving here for the summer, why don't you sublet a place from a student?
You should see sublet ads pop up on craigslist sometime in the spring - they are cheap and usually in good areas. Where does your boyfriend live? Do you want to be near him?

The Strip also had 2 murders last year and at least one more by the cops in a shoot out there. The only murder downtown was over something that started in the Strip. I was told Al's Bar is a trouble spot that should have been shut down, wherever that is.
Regardless, I'd choose the Strip over shaky Homestead.

And the other was a domestic dispute at Eat N Park.
I loved how you started your original comment, "I'm astonished at the murders there", and it boiled down to two.
To the original poster, my wife and I go to the Waterfront all of the time. We grocery shop there, catch movies, dine, etc. Never once have we felt threatened. We are the first people to really research an area and would never move in to an area we felt threatened in. We had talked about moving down there, but it came down to, we thought waking up each morning and looking at an expansive shopping and dinning complex just wasn't for us.
Homestead is one of the unfortunate statistics of the leaving of the Steel industry. Homestead has had it's crime issues, but anyone who knows me knows I'm a news junkie and am familiar with whats been going on where, and there actually hasn't been anything in Homestead in some time.
